I considered getting one of those, but they cost about $60-70 more than other access points/routers using 802.11g. Besides which, my Powerbook is a 15", so it only does 802.11b. I ended up buying a D-Link access point/router for $80.

Wireless access is great... just make sure you have WEP enabled so that not only your wireless transmissions are sent encrypted, other people can't use your access point without permission. ("No, sir, I don't know who was downloading all those movies... whatdya mean, I'm still responsible?!")

Granted, WEP is a terrible form of security and can be broken in hours if enough network traffic is sent over the interface, but it's better than nothing. :kirby:

I was going to point out that WEP sucks all ass as far as secrutity goes, but... I guess you're right. Some is better than none. There was a really good 2600 that had an actual cover story (something 2600 rarely has) on 802.11b and the brodcast maps all over NYC. Basically, Manhattan at least, is permeated with signals and the security through out is weak as all hell.

Don't forget: You can use your game systems on a wireless network too using a wireless ethernet bridge.

It's just too bad that the bridges cost like twice as much as the routers do.

I have my desktop hardwired to my wireless router, a cardbus adaptor in my laptop for wireless access, and a bridge so that my PS2 is wireless as well. Best thing ever if you don't have a house wired for ethernet.

  5. I just set it up. I'm wired into the router and my moms computer is wireless. I think it's working although this download I have going right now has just stopped dead in it's tracks for some reason. I don't have WEP turned on right now, the wireless didn't like it when I tried it on.

  6. I have my whole house hardwired (3 bedrooms & living room). I've got a router in "the computer room" for my desktops and a switch in the living room wired to my consoles. Whenever I want to get online in the living room, I just jack up my iBook into the switch.

No drops in the bathroom though, so no browsing the web while you're taking the browns to the super bowl.

Linksys makes a wireless-B adapter for consoles (or anything else with an ethernet port).

It's not cheap, but it's cheaper than a bridge.
