Thread: Sega Consolidation

  1. you mis-read. i remember reading about how he wouldn't mind doing another game in the series because the first game didn't sell well, and he'd like to give it another go. but he never said another Rez game was in development.

at the moment, UGA is working on a secret GameCube project.

  2. I can't wait for the excuses Sega fans will make for Sega making such a bad decision this time.

The only reason Sega lives is because they make games that, intentional or not, aim for the niche. Trying to force Sega to be mainstream only means the mainstream won't give a damn, and the niche won't get its fix. And Sega gets screwed from both sides - but I guess they're asking for it.

oh yeah...and AM2 is the 'hardcore' development team?

    *giggles uncontrollably*

  3. Wow Entertainment combines with Overworks.
A rather odd fit -- the makers of House of the Dead combined with Sega's premier RPG team -- but this group's focus is on games for all age groups.
I guess that'll mean more Skies and less Shinobi for me.

  4. Fuck, my two favorite Sega teams have merged and it sounds like a disaster - who wants to play Jet Set Monkey Ball? I don't. Amusement Visions might fuck up Smilebit's unique style, and Smilebit might make Amusement Visions games needlessly complex. Imagine SMB3 controlling like Gunvalkyrie.

    This sucks.

  5. Personally I'm not scared. Sega going mainstream will allow them to focus on games people buy which then funds the risky stuff. It wouln't be much difference from say nintendo, in that they milk franchises (popular stuff) which keeps thier brand image in a lot of people's minds. If they become like EA (but with quality ) there is potential for a comeback to thier old glory megadrive days.

Now they need to work on thier old stuff that we all remember, Streets of fucken rage, Alex (the ) Kidd, Wonder Boy, Golden Axe, etcetc. You know?

The key to remember is tastes don't change that much over time, (mainstream) and people hate taking risks when paying up the $ to buy games.

Still, they should remain focused (do not become like acclaim, or lazy EA and work on multiplatform franchises with little care to the platform stengths) as others have been, so people actually notice when a big release comes around and they can create some hype. (Is it just me or as consoles become more powerful, the mainstream will have less appreciation of, or take no notice of, the technical merits of games? The hardware gets to a point where its enough to meet basic needs so that people don't care about differences? The whole "exclusivity" nonsense is just so 1 manufacturer can keep its existing base loyal and not because "X title was not technically possible to make" for another platform.)

...which was meant to be unveiled in March. I'm worried that their silence on that particular point will turn out to be an effect of what's going on now.
    BTFJ

  7. well, the changes don't take effect til october, so that's why i said i hope they finish it up by then. all the other teams are doing what they're doing (OutRun2, Billy Hatcher, PSO Ep3, F-Zero, so on and so on). so im hoping the same applies for UGA.

    so here's hoping.

I'm sorry for feigning ignorance, but just what have they done besides Sega Rally II, Space Channel 2 and Rez? While all good games, I don't think they are the top dev group in Sega's stable, not by a long shot.

On the other hand, there's no evidence that they still won't make games that they want, or at least make games that are just dripping in their own unique style.

    So cool your jets, folks.

I don't think any of this is bad, at least not yet. They are trying to be as efficient with their resources as humanly possible, without losing the talent and (hopefully) quality of their previous games. Hell, I think it's about time Sega threw away even just a little bit of its quirkiness, just to have a substantial amount of income to survive. They have the talent, now they need a lazer-like focus to make more broad-appealing games. I don't think it's impossible to have a quirky game being mainstream. It's just a matter of balance.

I read someone else's thoughts at another forum, and I can see where he was going. To paraphrase him, he said that Sega teamed these groups up with one another because one of them weren't making as much successful (ie. $$) games as the other, so hopefully the pairings will balance out. Sonic Team might help UGA make a game that appeals more to the masses while UGA puts imaginative gameplay and quirkiness that even Samba de Amigo can't reach.

I don't see how these teams will hinder one another as so many here think. As long as key members or these teams weren't fired or anything, everything should be cool.

for me, Rez tops anything that Sonic Team has ever done (although im quite a big fan of PSO and ChuChu). i also like Sega Rally 2 more than every Sonic Team game (except PSO). don't care for SC5, but like i said, Rez alone tops anything Sonic Team has ever done. for me atleast.

  10. Another brilliant business move by the monkeys at Sega. I've gone from loving this company to not really giving a shit if they live or die.

Someone should take Sega off autopilot or just put it out of its misery.
