Thread: Any Stanley Kubrick fans at TNL?

  1. Removed a replicant? I studied this film for around 6 months, and I never heard about that...

Oh, and by Blade Runner, I mean the directors cut by default. The other version is pretty fucked in comparison.

  2. Uhh..the only changes between the original and the directers cut is the removing of the narration and the addition of the unicorn scene/ending.

Study it some more, there is a missing replicant, and that is the reason that the fight scenes are fucked up, due to moving them. That's why he has bruises on his face with Leon before he fights him, etc.

There are scenes out of order, and that is the reason why.

yeah, which makes the film much better.

I'll take your word for it.

  4. Based on seeing

    A Clockwork Orange
    2001
    The Shining
    Full Metal Jacket

overall, I like Kubrick's movies. Full Metal Jacket is great, the Shining is fantastic, so is Clockwork.

2001 is one of the most amazingly well composed/beautiful films ever, but it's boring.

And regarding all the symbolism nonsense: reminds me of the hacks in art school that put the shittiest drawing you've ever seen up and then come up with all this bullshit about chakras to explain why it's good. Although I haven't seen Eyes Wide Shut so I can't comment. Still makes you sound like an ass though.

  5. I'm a big fan of Kubrick.

Here's how I would rank his films that I've seen:

    1. Clockwork Orange
    2. 2001
    3. Dr. Strangelove
    4. Paths of Glory
    5. Full Metal Jacket
    6. Eyes Wide Shut
    7. The Killing
    8. The Shining
    9. Spartacus
    10. lolita

Lolita is the only film I didn't like, just seems really outdated and tame for what it is going for. The Killing and Paths of Glory are older gems that are worth seeing. The Shining is a little overated IMO, Jack is really over-the-top and hammy. Full Metal Jacket= fantastic first half, somewhat lame second half. Eyes is bizarre and mysterious, it's great at setting mood and attmosphere but overall story and plot is so-so. Eyes is definitely worth seeing although like 2001, it might bore the pants off you. Clockwork and 2001 i think are masterpieces, must sees.

  6. Kubrick is my favorite director. I might even go as far as saying he was the greatest artist of the 20th century.

My favorite film of his, and favorite overall, is Barry Lyndon. I think only 1 person has mentioned it in this thread, and thats sad. Its hands down the most beautiful film of all time.

I love Eyes Wide Shut, but mainly for the atmosphere, lighting, and music.

I think 2001 is the most impressive film ever made.

  7. [QUOTE=MVS]Blade Runner is a great movie, one of my best, QUOTE]

MVS, YOU made Blade Runner?! That's awesome!

And I thought the GameFan career was impressive enough

  8. I actually quite liked Lolita. At the very least it's far better than the perverted abomination that the newer one is. But I loved Dr. Strangelove

  9. Kubrick is kind of confusing to me, but I have enjoyed most of his movies. Dr. Strangelove is my fav by far, thanks almost entirely to Peter Sellers' performance. Full Metal Jacket was good, but got kind of dull towards the end. Clockwork Orange is also good; very trippy. Lolita is another of my favs, once again thanks to Peter Sellers. I haven't seen all of his movies, but I think Eyes Wide Shut is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Ever. Sorry.

    SC

  10. I'm pretty sure that Eyes Wide Shut is the definition of a love it or hate it film.
