unlike blue shift, opposing force actually has new source material (weapons, aliens, textures, etc..) it's also a much better game. the only thing blue shift is good for is the high-definition upgrade for the character models.
I thought they were both worth playing through but I definately liked OpForce more (more then the original HL in fact), you should give em both a try, Blue Shift only takes a few hours to blow through.
Some HL fans will actually swear that Opposing Force's single-player mode is even more fun than the original Half-Life's is. Blue Shift is short but sweet and can be blown through pretty fast, though it'll all probably seem pretty passe by the time you finish the original HL and OF.
I'm one of the few who wasn't super-thrilled with the original Half-Life. I liked it okay but didn't see any big deal. I think it was the first FPS I played on my computer so maybe if I'd grown up on Doom and Quake I'd have been more impressed with how far the genre had come? I don't know but I'm not one that usually goes against the grain, ranting about how the popular games aren't all that. In fact, I almost always agree with popular opinion ('cept where FFX is concerned which I don't hate but I do think it's the worst FF I've played [except for Rikku]).
Wait. Actually I played Shogo before I played Half-Life and I loooooved that. So I don't know what my problem was but I was non-plussed and scratching my head at the multiple game of the year (or even all time, some were saying) nods. Anyway...
I bought Opposing Force/Blue Shift bundle a couple years ago just 'cause my PC was now old and not much new software would run on it. Well, I had an absolute blast with OpForce. I thought it was so cool and so fun and the aliens' sound effects were awesome. I loved every second of it. Ah, it was good times. Blue Shift was pretty good, still better than I remember the original HL but not as good as OpForce.
