Thread: Katamari Damacy

  1. Personally, I'm fairly impressed with the quality of the translation work that was done. The King speaks like some Monty Python reject, which would have been a prime target for some juicy Engrish, but it all makes complete sense. The monotone voices in the cut scenes are perfect as well. Thumbs-up, Namco. Just translate the text and voices and leave the content untouched. That's the way to go.

I didn't really notice that anyone was speaking Japanese...I just noticed random English or amusing cries (or, in some cases, singing). Guess I'll listen closer the next time I run over somebody.

There is a mode like that -- there is just a secondary requirement. You have to get a big ass katamari in the final stage of each zone (stage 4 for the house, stage 8 for the town and the final stage for the world). The actual size requirements are 1m30cm, 25m, and 800m respectively. You will know you hit the mark when little angels start flying around your katamari. Once you do it (and finish the game) a little bubble should appear on the stage marker, and when you select it the king will ask you if you want to do a normal timed run or just roll around forever.

  5. The game is selling well, there is justice in the world - http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/puzzle/k...s_6109142.html

And here's a neat excerpt from aechris' FAQ for the game on GameFAQs -

There are also three different areas to play without time a limit called "Eternal" stages. Please keep in mind you need to have finished the game before they open up. You can unlock them in the following ways:

Eternal 1 - Build up the ball past 1m30cm in Make a Star 4
Eternal 2 - Build up the ball past 25m in Make a Star 8
Eternal 3 - Build up the ball past 800m in Make the Moon

If you hit triangle at the Earth once you've beaten all of the levels (minus the Eternal stages), you can watch the movies all again and you get a sound test for all the music in the game. Excellent, excellent bonus, considering the music is so awesome.

On top of this, if you can speed clear the stages you will get a shooting star to view in the View Stars mode. To view these stars, simply enter View Stars mode and press the button associated with that level.

    All done.

Yeah, I gotta try that stuff out when I get home. This game has far more replay value than I gave it credit for.

  8. Hell, I was worried that dub/sub debate #2,003,028 would begin and derail this thread when someone started bitching about the lack of the stupid "J-track". Happily, we avoided that, but then this noob comes along. Props to Mzo for keeping the thread pure.

Anyway, back on track...man, this game has some physics engine. It may not be the prettiest game out there but the way it works with everything sticking to the ball in real-time...sweet.

  9. Don't know if it's been mentioned yet...

But Namco's "Taiko Drum Master" will have song from KD on it =D

  10. As far as Master and I cansee, there is no level that lets you start out as the really tiny ball. The big endless one goes from 1 meter up. Still fricking awesome though.
