Running Jokes in Video Gaming

Maniac Mansion from Lucasfilm Games (now LucasArts) had a chainsaw somewhere in the game, but you couldn't actually use it. If you tried to use it, the character would simply say, "It's out of gas. Look for gas in a future Lucasfilm game."

When Lucasfilm Games released Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders a year or two later, there was a can of gasoline somewhere in the game. If you attempted to use it, the character would say, "It's for a different game."

Awesome.



There are parts in Paper Mario and Mario RPG where if you jump into a pot, or go behind a column, you turn into 8-bit Mario briefly.

The units have typical things they say when you click them or give them a command...repeatedly clicking them will eventually cause them to say humorous things related to their character...some have as many as 10 or so extra phrases, and in WC3, they even have in-jokes between characters (like the Demon Hunter and the Dread Lord). It was fairly tame in WC2 and SC, but in WC3, that just went over the top with it...which is fairly funny itself, since you'd never hear any of it in normal gameplay.

The campaign hero units have different quotes than the generic hero units, I never knew that until I was looking up some of quotes. I like the Spellbreaker's quote in TFT.

Not only units you control, but I know the sheep in Warcraft 2 would say a famous quote , and the blow up. In Starcraft all critters blow up like a nuclear explosion, and they also do in Warcraft 3.
