Thread: 320kbps VBR MP3 vs. .WAV file

  1. 320kbps VBR MP3 vs. .WAV file

I want to know how many of you hear a difference between these two 20 second clips. Right Click "Save Target as" ( in Windows anyway ) and download away. One file is a raw .wav, and the other was encoded ( using AudioCatalyst ) to 320kbps VBR MP3 and then back into .WAV using Winamp. They are both around 3.5 MB's - and I'll probably take them down soon so try the experiment while you can. The file was initially cropped using Nero Wave Edit, seeing as I apparently haven't installed Cool Edit on this system yet. For all I know, Winamp converting it back to a .WAV may add some noise too, I'll see what you guys think.

Hell, CD-R's are like 25 cents now - burn 'em and try them in your favorite CD player - can you tell which is which?

I ask you, fellow TNL'ers - which is the pure wave and which sounds like "total shit"?

  2. i certainly can't tell the difference. even though the format is lossy, 320 kb/s vbr mp3s are effectively identical to the actual recording, as i'm sure you're aware. try encoding it at 128 or 192 kbps vbr. they're much more common on teh internet.

That's my whole point. I think because people have heard crappy 128kbps MP3's or even just poorly encoded files they are down on the format, period. I can't really tell the difference - I wanted to see what others thought.

Heh, a challenge, eh? OK. I'll get back to you after I get out of here and have access to my real sterio at home and in my car.

Two is the wav. One is the MP3.

Of course... this is what my laptop speakers are telling me.

  6. I can't tell... but then again, I'm horrible at this stuff...

    Town: Arcadia

  7. One is the MP3. Two is the real stuff. My drummer/musician roomate also agrees. The sound of the cymbals on track 1 sound like someone stepping on tinfoil. That's not what drums sound like. The snare drum is missing "oomph" as well.

Mine too, actually. I didn't get a chance to really crank them last night ( it was late ) and now that I have I'm convinced that Winamp converting it to .Wav has somehow altered the tone and/or volume mildly.

Just for the hell of it I'm posting links to a max vbr and a 320 cbr MP3 file of this same clip. For some reason the original MP3 files sound closer to the original than the MP3>.Wav does, imo.

On top of that, I'm not using what's considered "the best" MP3 encoder either.

I consider myself lucky (unlucky?) in this respect – I’m willing to bet I could hardly tell the difference between a 128kbps MP3 and Redbook audio.

However, video is a whole different story. I actually think DVD's look like crap half the time. Fortunately I can seemingly turn off whether or not I notice, so it works out in the end
