Thread: Trent Reznor pulls out of DOOM III.

  1. IMO DOOM3 will suck very, very, hard. HL2 will most likely pwn it, as will other FPS like Tron 2.0 and Deus Ex 2. Hell it might even play worse than Halo 2.

  2. Nintendo GameCube

Anyway, here's my deal. I've been very to somewhat disappointed in id products since Quake came out. Given some of the things I've heard and read, I see no reason to think Doom III will turn out any differently. If it does, super. But my prediction? Doom III will confirm that id is still better at designing technology than gameplay.

    Clear enough?
    Fair enough.

I may have responded a bit harshly, but I'm tired of newer (better) games coming out and not getting the attention they diserve. I was fine with the popularity of CS about 2-3 years ago when it was still new, but now it's just unacceptable. It's almost like Street Fighter 2 being the most popular fighting game. Sure, it's ok to go back and play it once and a while, but there are much better things out there. Things that were expanded on, improved.

  4. Halo 2 looks pretty nice, much better than the first... but if a generic(albeit polished) game beats a game from one of the best series of all time it'd be a huge embarrasment for ID.-_o

  5. Q3 stomps all over UT, and is leaps and bounds beyond in level design. Sure, UTs levels are often better in a visual sense (leaping among rooftops and the like) but they play like ass. UT2k3 was better then UT but still inferior in every way except Bombing Run. I wrote a review of UT2k3 and gave it a great score, but as I found out a month later a lot of that was simply being without a copy of Q3 for so long. Once I got another copy of that game (we had two copies go missing from my house) I realized I had forgotten what it's like to have perfect play control again, and UT2k3 became damn near unplayable to me. Ever since, I keep my copy of Q3 close, so as to never make that mistake again.

Will Doom III be little more then atmosphere and killing things? Not a chance in hell. By the same token, no other recent FPS with the exclusion of Tron 2.0 can match its atmosphere and artistic design. How the level design ends up as a finished product remains to be seen for all these contenders, but I have a strong feeling Doom III will be within the top three slots once this current batch has all been released.

Hmm... I wonder if Breed is substantially closer to release yet...

  6. You can't blame the game if the are morons playing it...

Can't disagree with you more on these points. UT is much better than quake 3. It seems that you have forgotten about assault mode, which was awesome for its objective based missions. Quake 3 had, uhhhh
oh yeah, deathmatch! UT had a tremendous musical score that set the tone for the matches, sometimes ambient and trippy, sometimes in your face. Quake 3 had generic industrial music by some shitty band(the name escapes me) UT had so many better maps filled with beautiful colors, Quake 3 had, uhhh , browns and reds. UT had weapons that each had interesting uses and alternate fires( The Redeemer!!!) Quake 3 had basically the same weapons that its always had. But everyone always uses the rocket launcher.
As far as control, I think that is a personal taste, so I can't really talk about that. I chose UT. I love UT. Quake isn't horrible or anything, but it wasn't anything worth writing home about. ID rested on their laurels and got spanked for it.

I do agree with your thoughts on UT2k3. It was too much like a Quake 3 wannabe.

My final suggestion to you is to install UT and play assault or perhaps Morpheus. That is level design at its finest

Forgotten or never cared about? Threewave CCTF is superior to even the potential of UT, let alone what it actually pulled off.

Funny, neither of those affect the gameplay in the slightest. I'm also not sure if you realized this, but their primary player base is on the PC where it's insanely simple to play music of your own choosing even if the game doesn't support custom soundtracks. If these were single player games both of those points might mean something, but in multiplayer frag fests no one cares even the slightest what color the walls are (aside from red and blue, of course) and most have the music turned off or are ignoring it anyway.

I see no problem here either way. Having different weapons is cool, but I also doubt that UT is going to change its lineup much in the new few years. Q3's weapons are situation-based, with each useful in its own way (aside from the machine gun) but none being able to dominate. UT has multiple firing methods but the pace of the game is also a lot slower, they wouldn't work in Quake's environment.
But everyone always uses the rocket launcher.
If by "rocket launcher" you mean "rocket launcher, railgun, shotgun, plasmagun, gauntlet" you're absolutely right. Many rely on the rocket launcher because of splash damage, although it's hardly the best weapon for most circumstances. It's a good mid-range and distance creating weapon, and that's about where its usefulness ends.

No thanks, I got my fill of UT a long time ago and I can't say there's any reason to go back.

Thats all Quake 3 ever promised from Day 1. If you expected more out of the box you should be slapped.

MechDeus covered the rest well enough.
