You can interpet the ending either way. I like to think he actually DID kill all those people, personally.
Anyway, I LOVE this movie and I think Christain Bale was amazing in it.
As for the book, it's great, though 10,000x more violent than the movie was. If they have filmed the movie like the book really was, it would have been banned in every country, I think. So, faced with the choice of still having extemem violence in the movie, but toned down from the novel, or basically implying everything or having it happen off-screen, they opted to go with choice #2, which I think was the best bet. Sometimes if you just hint at something it gets a person's mind working in ways that pure gore can't.
Still, the convrsion from novel to movie was brilliant- the movie remains totally loyal to the spirit of the book. Nothing is changed, other than the violence shown (LOTS is implied, however). The book is told in the first person by Bateman himself, and Christain Bale is the PERFECT Patrick Bateman. All of the scenes and dialogue are taken directly from the novel, and several seperate scenes are taken from the book and spliced together for the film just to get most of the good stuff in there. The only thing I was disapointed that was left out was a scene with Bateman, his girlfriend, and a urinal mint, as the scene was really funny. Otherwise, if you liked the movie, and have a strong stomach (the gore in the novel is described in extremely disgusting detail), I really recommend reading the novel.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and return some video tapes.
