Thread: Just picked up Shiri on dvd....

  1. Just picked up Shiri on dvd....

What an excellent movie this is. This gets one of my highest recommendations so if you are an action movie fan, check out Shiri.

  2. Well, Shri is a great action movie. It has both some great action scenes, and combines them with nice romantic subplot. It worked pretty well on me. I posted my impressions on it last year on the older TNL, and recently, Ssbombeman had a thread about it in Anime board.

I'm surprised on how good US dvd of it is. Nothing was cut, quality is great, they kept original soundtrack. Definately a step forward in presentation of Asian films in US.

  3. A rather intriguing film. When it comes to movies like Shiri... You know, tons of characters to keep tabs on and some really complex scenarios and character relations to be had, I get lost. I managed to keep my feet firm through most of the movie, but this is one of those movies that I NEED to see a second time in order to really understand.

Example: I still don't know who that girl in the yellow sweater is.

Anyway, it was pretty well done. The concept was very cool and I was definitely surprised when, you know... THAT happened. I didn't mind the love story elements in the least bit, despite my general distate for that sort of thing. The way in which it was incorporated was really interesting.

Also, the introduction was very nicely done and the action bits were pretty intense. No bullshit there. It seemed fairly 'realistic.'

Good stuff. I'd love to give it another run-through.

EDIT: Forgot - $5 million to make that movie? Very surprising to see that.

  4. they kept original soundtrack.
the ending theme seems a little suspect to me. like it just doesn't sound like that was the original song playing there. i asked one of my korean friends about that but he hadn't seen it in such a long time that he really doesn't remember.

good movie though and surprised me to see it domestically released. the theatrical run was also really low key here in nyc afaik.

  5. ...

Korean cinema is being hailed as the new HK cinema and rightly so, I have just started to get into this, but it is showing a lot of growth and promise. Shiri is an excellent film and a good intro into the new Korean cinema. as far as cost, Asian filmmakers make films at a fraction of what the U.S. does and the U.S. usually has nothing to show for that extra money. Stars are over-paid and crews are way too large here...we Americans just love to waste money...

  6. Ssbomberman, Since you got region free player now, you can check out alot of Korean films. I reccoment JSA, Friend, MUSA, Lost Memories 2009, Ressurection of Little Match Girl(not subbed), Public Enemy, No Blood No Tears, Yesterday, Sympathy for Mr Vegeance, Phantom the Submarine and many more.

Yeah and it's working wonderfully, I have a list ready to go on most of those titles as soon as I get my check for freelance writing work I did this month -- the problem with Korean and Japanese films is that they are still quite expensive compared to HK DVDs...where's the cheapest place you get them from? Yesasia has some of the titles I am looking for, but most of them are like 30 bucks each...HK DVDs are so much cheaper...

  8. Yes, Korean dvds are usually more expensive than HK ones. Some Korean films have been released in HK - JSA, Friend, The Anarchists, Phantom the Submarine, Shiri, Soul Guardians, Tell Me Something, and those versions are cheaper than Korean editions.

I usually use YesAsia, Poker Industries or MrKwangs Ebay store:

Sometimes YesAsia has some good deals on dvds, and their pricing is lower than Pokers. Plus you can get Free shipping, when they have promotions.

i can honestly say that i hated this flick. from the first scene with the 'kissingurami' fish, we all(the 5 of us that watched this) knew what was up. the action scenes were completely horseshit(sans the 'north korean training grounds' part in the beginning).

i mean, a shootout in the kitchen with south koreans that have fully automatic rifles and none of the bullets are going thru the flimsy metal casing protecting the 'general' with the pistol? (which is rarely reloaded, and he stands still while people dump rounds on him and he almost never got hit while he fires a hand gun and kills the 'good guys' with no problem)

Can this shit get anymore retarded? oh yeah...'explodo pill 2000', the 'super water dynamite', the immune system sick chick(with some FUCKED up teeth), and that retard that changes the fishtanks makes it so deep with story.

*motions for director/writers of this film to juggle his balls in their collective mouth*

it's like a van-damme flick without all the shitty kungfu and replay angles(but that's ok, van-damme is in line to do Street Fighter 2 the movie...HAHHAAHAHAHAHAA). horrible story, god awful action, and some of the worst characters i've ever seen(a korean super assasin that falls in love and starts up a fucking fish store? eat my ass)

this is almost as bad as shaq fu, and in turn; gets 5 fucking kazaams.
