Thread: A Few iPod Questions

    A Few iPod Questions

After I've decided that I've had enough of switching clunk 40 MB disks (which were top of the line at the time... I might add ) I started eyeing an iPod. Anyhow I just have a few questions about them before I buy one...

I dont think it does, but can it play .wma files? All my CDs are copied into .wma cuz windows media player is really convenient for copying CDs and all...

When is the next iPod version coming out? I'm looking for possibly and FM tuner or sumthing...

I had a few others but not I cant remeber, so umm... yea

  2. Um...yeah, I am pretty sure the new Ipods play .wma

And another version will not come for a while considering a new version was just released. I dont know of an FM tuner, but considering they have everything else under the sun for an Ipod I dont see why not.

yea your right, I just need to know about the .wma format thing because at the iPod site it only listed some mac format and mp3 and maybe wav as supported, so I'm not sure...

  4. Just get it, if it doesn't play .wma, just have your parents buy you another one that does.

  5. I was wondering when someone was going to do that. I was myself but I thought I'd try being civil for once.

  6. or they could just buy him a new VW Beatle that comes with an iPod.

and then he can run the Beatle over with his Hummer.

or he could just stop posting here.

  7. copied from a post i made in the apple/mac thread a while ago:

Things I wish I knew about the iPod before I bought it. Please note this applies to the last model, and I have not spent time with the new one, so some of these might (hopefully) be fixed. Some might even be specific to my particular unit, maybe it’s a little screwy, I don’t know.

    1. The useless backlight. The contrast on the screen is not even when the unit is lit vs unlit. When setting the contrast to look right when the light is off, the screen is too dark and mostly unreadable when the light is on. When the light comes on in already well lit conditions, it inverts the screen and is generally annoying. I would have liked a normal indiglo style backlight. As it is the light remains off at all times on my iPod.

    2. The touchpad. This thing will act up according to the temperature. It generally performs well in warm weather, but hates the cold. I shouldn’t even say cold, it hates not being very very warm and will not register all the time, making navigation stutter, and move very slowly.

    3. The interface. I know everyone creams themselves over the interface but this thing NEEDS MORE BUTTONS! Car operation is a huge pain because you need to pay attention to the screen to do almost anything (see also point 5). It’s one button mouse syndrome all over again, form over function, and aimed at simpletons.

    4. Organization. I want to arrange my own folders! In order to get the set up I wanted I had to bastardize many of the ID3 tags on my MP3s. I like their auto sorting, but I want my own sorting as well. No, playlists don’t count.

    5. When you finish an album it should play the next album, when you finish an artist it should play the next artist. As far as I can tell there is not a setting to allow this. Isn’t this option common sense? Because of this, and because the remote is feeble in general, when an album is up you need to use the main controls. The remote is practically useless. It feels like I’m not using a huge music “jukebox”, and I might as well be switching CDs.

I think those are my big complaints. I will say the unit feels nice and sturdy and has sustained a few small drops with no problems. And with the poor reputations of every other HD MP3 player I have to recommend it if that’s what you need. However I think the only reason this unit gets so much praise is because of the general shittyness inherent in 95% of the MP3 hardware out there.

Get an Archos... and then hang yourself and go away forever.

Like 88mph said, get an Archos - or hell - get an Ipod, Archos, and the new Nomad Zen while you're at it. See which one you like best. If you REALLY want the latest and greatest portable audio ( and video ) toy and money isn't an issue - than the new Archos AV320 is for you ( and $600! ).

  10. Get a NetMD.

(You can hire someone to switch discs for you)
