Thread: External hard drives.

  1. External hard drives.

I need an external hard drive. Simple.

It has to be PC/Mac compatible, should be no bigger than 40 gigs, should be Firewire-compatible [Firewire AND USB, if possible], and... preferably under $100.

    Any suggestions? Links to buy?

    Thank you.

External hard drives tend to be pretty expensive, more than that $100 unless you buy used/refurb.

One thing you might look at, though, is if you have a hard drive laying around that you're not using, you can get an IDE enclosure for it, effectively turning an internal drive into an external drive.

    Just a thought.

  3. Well, I know Maxtor external USB2/Firewire 160GB drives 7200RPM are like $200...but, I don't think a 40GB drive would be proportionately cheaper, since the materials involved and whatnot keep it up.

Best I could find - that's about $180 all things considered, but it's probably cheaper in the US.

  5. Try zeehoo; I bought my 80GB WD firewire from here.

Their 40gb is $94. But, I dunno what HDD brands you like. You could go with a case and use an existing drive you might have like Gohan said. Theirs are pretty cheap too.

  6. my 2.5 gig went for $60 just a year ago. I wonder what it would be going for now.

Don't listen to any of the drives' specs - if they're formatted in that Mac/PC Exchange format, they will rarely show up in OS 9. Careful!

  8. Well, I won't be using it with anything other than OSX [in terms of Macs.]

I did some additional searching and found these two:

It's a bit more than I want to spend [and a bit bigger than I really need], but oh well. Any thoughts?

No such thing. You'll need the extra space whether you realize it or not.

  10. USB external drives suck the worst. ACOM is really bad - we get several of them per month from people who put really important data on them and lost it because the drive was completely hosed. Terrible track record. I would just bite the bullet and get a LaCie drive. They're all around best.
