i purposely ignored zelda, since i put the original zelda above every other game ever made, (even >gasp< morrowind) so for me it was soulbalzer that was the next best, illusion of gaia was pretty hit or miss story wise, and terranigma is a lot of fun, so it took the top spot for me. This is a tough poll though, as these kind of games are my favorite genre.

Call this sub-genre what you want, but it wouldn't exist without Zelda, therefore Zelda definitely belongs.

The Secret of Mana series wins, but only because of the three player co-op mode in the first game.

I really don't think a game like Wind Waker (or, to be fair, LttP) is that similar to say, Secret of Mana. Sure you're on a quest in both games, sure there's swordplay to be had, but I think Secret of Mana has a lot more RPG trappings than any Zelda game does. I don't think of Zelda as an RPG, never have, and never will. Despite the many similarities, I think it's safe (and sane) to call one an action-adventure and the other an action-RPG.

And again, if we're just talking quality series, there really is no contest... Zelda would easily win, I'm certainly not knocking it's quality any.

I don't count it as an action-rpg but Wonderboy is the best thing on that list.

My favorite series that I think would qualify as an an action RPG would be "Tales of..." followed by Seiken Densetsu/

If we limit ourselves to 2d games, then Monster World has a chance against Zelda. Zelda's 3d games, especially Ocarina, are what gives it the advantage.

I never thought the 3D Zeldas were better than Link to the Past. Wonderboy really is one of the few series in that category that I think is just much better than Zelda too.

The 2D Zeldas never stuck with me, it wasn't til Ocarina that I bothered to play a Zelda game more than once.

Also enjoy Oasis, Record of Loddoss War, Neutopia (did Zelda better than Zelda IMO), and Soul Blazer.
