Nintendo registered a design for a "wireless transmitter device for a portable game" with the Japanese government back on October 7, 2002. The design documents refer to the thing as a "pager", but as you can see in the pic below and the full gallery at
GameOnline, the device is obviously a GBA cartridge. The front end juts out a little bit because there's apparently a connector stuck on for PDAs and other devices.

The first word of a Nintendo pager device came out last December, with the news that the company was designing some kind of transmitter thingie with Japanese wireless outfit Yozan. Back then, Yozan chairman Nao Takatori had this to say about the tie-up agreement:
"While I can't go into details, we have received a development plan from Nintendo for a device related to pagers. It's not a pager, though, so much as it is a new kind of application of the technology."
We'll have to see whether this will be released as an actual product, and if so what kind of use it will have. It's easy to imagine Nintendo making an adaptor that would eliminate the need for cables when playing multiplayer games, but perhaps the company has more original ideas working behind this device. Turn your GBA into a PDA, perhaps?
