Heh, that Dondokodon cover not only doesn't look bad, it looks great! I love that plastic troll thing. I also like the "Popey Mario". I just miss Mario's old school early 80's look I guess.

My absolute favorite covers are the ones that miss the point of the game entirely. I still can't get over Bomberman. River City Ransom misses the point by such a large margin that it's scary. It's not even bad art (unlike the Bomberman cover), it's just way, way off the mark with the feel of the game. Why were we "protected" from superdeformed and cartoony characters on our boxes in the 80's anyway? Especially when the in-game sprites were squishy and cute.

Chibi Nappa: Well I didn't say the Mendel Palace artwork was bad, but it misses the whole point of the game. Like how cpme Quinty look like a dominatrix?

Also, I didn't think that Donkey Kong flyer with "Popey Mario" was bad either.

Anyway, the only reason why game companies didn't used the original Japanese cover arts in the American versions of their games is probably due to the fact that putting anime artwork in game covers was considered evil for some reason or another back then.
