Samurai swordfighting is very efficient and subtle (which they sort of got at in the Liu fight, if the actors hadn't messed it up), Uma never was. Maybe that's what they were getting at when they said she can't fight like a samurai.
KB was more of a merge of frantic Shaw kung fu films, with muc slower Japanese samurai films. First half of the battle in the House of Blue Leaves, goes in the manner, many old kung fu film's restaraunt brawles were done, and then it goes into classic samurai style battle between main characters. Even if Uma's character lacked the distinct samurai characteristic, she still did the part very well.

I consider that a negative. I don't like movies were I'd just as soon have the protagonist die as any the others. The difference, I feel between this and Eastwood stuff, is that Eastwood still presented a charismatic, if stoic, character that you rooted for. This felt more like Mel Gibson's Payback, were it's just a bunch of bad people doing bad things to each other.
I liked the fact that all the characters were bad. Its different from your usual one Good guy must face the Evil template majority of Hollywood films use. And I like Gibson's Payback

In the original teaser, there was a scene with Uma training with a crazy, old, white-haired Japanese kung-fu master-type character...

Where the hell did the scene go?

And there was also a snippet with an African-American guy swinging around a sword that was absent from the film...

EDIT: Here is a 'light' Battle Without Honor remix...

It's longer than the way-too-short OST version, as well.
Click, that flashback will be in the Volume 2. I dont know why they had it for the trailer for the Vol 1 though. Unless the trailer was done for the film, before the decision to split it in two was made.

Well, I have to disagree with you here. To me most of the deaths in KB had great impact. From the hospital scene, to the O-Ren Ishii past, to the Fox character and final confrontation against O-Ren and Crazy 88.

In Ong Bak, fights were great, and phisical impact was felt, but it was just different than how it was done here. And I still prefer swordfights to the regular combat But thats just me.

From the way people blur in motion to the travelling through the body as a bullet, the only thing that felt remotely not like him and like IG was Cottonmouth's face under the bed.
Uhh... Let's just say I disagree. Other than the rough outlines, it was definately the work of Production IG. Did you see Blood: The Last Vampire and Ghost in the Shell?

That's what happens when you make a martial arts film without martial artists (and unfortunate trend, and a major problem with the Matrix series as well)

  3. I gotta say, some of the comments in here sound like perfect examples of the ranting of fanboys who need to seriously get a life. For God's sake, can't you just go to a movie and watch it and enjoy it without thinking "Oh he fucked up that part there" or "a real samurai would never do something like that" or whatnot? Seriously, get the sticks out of your asses.

Just got back from seeing it. Lord almighty this has to be one of the funnest, most enjoyable films I've ever seen. My only regret is that I didn't get to go see it on opening night, because I can imagine with a full house it would have been even more fun. I don't care if Uma was holding her sword wrong in scene #1204 or if Lucy's Japanese was a bit shit at parts, because I was too busy enjoying myself to start thinking of the anal rantings I was going to post about the movie once I got home.

And the violence wasn't funny? Are you serious? We were laughing during at least half the movie. Not because what we saw was shit or because it was cheezy or anything, but laughing because what we just saw was so fucking cool it was unbelievable.

Oh, and even with her slightly odd nose, God DAMN do I want me one of those Gogos. *imaging shidoshi walking around with hardcore kogal bodyguard*

Thanks for posting that, this is my favorite song in the entire movie. Every one should download this.

  5. That song is from some Japanese action movie, can't remember the name (read about it at AICN). My favorite number was the spanish-y music that plays as the Bride and O-Ren are facing each other down. I downloaded the last few songs on the soundtrack, and it wasn't on there:/

Funny, your evaluation of the film sounds quite similar, just for it rather than against.

I had legitimate reasons for not liking the film, and I explained them. Chief among them being wanton human mutilation. I guess I don't qualify that as "so fucking cool it was unbelievable." No one in theatre I went to thought it was funny, and probably 8 or so people walked out halfway through.

Try to get a little perspective...a thread can contain more than people gushing idiotically for something.

I was just about to post about the constant damn whining. Thanks for saving me some time. The movie and fights were well done, get over it. Everytime an American movie with kungfu comes out people jump all over the way the actors move. I think your all insane.

and shidoshi, your damn right about the gore. I laughed my ass off. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

  8. The only person I laughed at while dying was the guy in the limo in the anime part. I laughed at the jokes, but not when a character died. I agree with what Harry at AICN said about the characters, they're people with real emotions and regrets caught inside an exploitation kung-fu revenge flick. One of my friends laughed when the french woman lost her arm, but it shocked me because of the look on her face before it happened. And from what Harry has said, the second movie will be less action and more drama, something I can't wait to see.

And Kai Doh Maru, yes, I'm quite familiar with them. Have you seen any Plympton work? Specifically the scenes with the military dad fighting and the sniper rifle are exactly Plympton's style and don't look like IG in any way shape or form, whereas the rest look like Plympton or IG imitating him.

Nothing in Matrix was half as stiff as that fight. Matrix suffers from two things: being slow in overall speed, and obvious setup regarding who they're fighting (which plagues almost every single martial arts movie in existance, someone's always moving really slow to give the hero a chance).

Just came back from seeing the movie... and I really enjoyed it. Highly entertaining. I spent a good portion of it with my mouth open and a total look of on my face because I couldn't believe how badass and great everything was.

Having said that, I only had 2 problems with the movie:

After she woke up and noticed that her baby was missing, she went into (understandable) hysterics. After a bit of this, she said "My baby..." I think we all knew what she was crying about (and if you didn't, you're a fucktard). To me, this felt like a clue as to what was happening that someone forced Tarantino to put in at some point to make sure everyone knew what she was crying about. I felt it cheapened the moment. My friend disagreed, so I could be wrong, but I didn't like it. The crying was enough.

Also, the swordfights between Uma and Liu's five bodyguards, lieutenants, whatever kinda sucked. Gogo was sweet, and when the whole gang showed up it was all good, but those initial 5 sucked.

That one shot that follows Uma to the bathroom, goes out through the resraurant and ends up in the bathroom again... that was awesome.

edit: Just read some of this stuff you people've posted, and I'd like to say that excessive, over-the-top violence is a valid form of comedy. I somehow don't think Kill Bill was written as a drama, in which the numerous negative consequences of actions such as murder and mutilation are (or should be) shown. It was a funny action movie, not Saving fucking Private Ryan.

edit2: Most Eastwood movies I've seen end with cheap, copout endings. Kill that Indian bitch, damn you!
