  1. Hey Despair take off those non-working smiley's for God's sake and just leave the Dante gif.

BTW I liked the film alot personally but you're defending this film way too much, almost to Equilibrium levels

Well, I can't argue there. I may not have liked the end result, but it's QT's movie to do with what he wishes. I can appreciate what he tried to do, anyway.

I keep telling him to fix his sig...and he should leave the EQ .gif as well.

Heheh. Well I tend to do that to the movies I enjoy

And Will, I will fix those in a minute.

  4. Japan is getting longer, unedited cut of KB for theatrical release.

I hope QT will have that version on US dvd release of KB, otherwise I will go for R2 dvd set.

Sweet! Looks like I might be going the region 2 route as well.

    The studio.

They are the ones that could have released it as one 3 hour movie but chose, solely for money, to break it up into 2 parts.

Anyone who says the movie had to be split up, is retarded.

    Kill Bill v1: 111 mins (1 hour, 41 mins)
    Kill Bill v2: 94 mins (1 hour, 34 mins)

    Total: 3 hours, 15 mins.

A 3 hour movie isn't common, but it's not the kiss of death either. Barring Heat, the following movies were all commercialy huge or critically praised or a combination of both.

Fellowship of the Ring (Theatrical Edition): 2 hours, 58 mins.
The Two Towers (Theatrical Edition): 2 hours, 59 mins.
    Braveheart: 2 hours 53 mins.
    Heat: 2 hours, 51 mins.
    Titanic: 3 hours, 11 mins.
    Gandhi: 3 hours, 8 mins.
    Godfather: 2 hours, 55 mins.
    Godfather: 3 hours, 20 mins.
Gone With The Wind: 3 hours, 58 mins.

Hell, 3 of those movies are in the top 12 all-time for money makers in the United States and Titanic is number 1 all time.

If you saw The Two Towers, but didn't watch The Fellowship of the Ring, you'd still be able to form an opinion on The Two Towers movie, even though you wouldn't have the full story of The Lord Of The Rings.

It's the same with this, a person can form an opinion on a movie that does not tell the entire story.
I've read in 4 different interviews that QT thinks the movie being split is a good idea.

A 3 hour movie is like an arthouse tribute to gindhouse films. He's made more than an homage to grindhouse films, he actually made a grindhouse film. Most of these films fall in the 90 minute range so to fit into that mold it makes complete sense to split the movie up. To quote him, "This is my tribute to grindhouse cinema, and something was bothering me about releasing a three hour gind-house movie. Two 90-minute movies coming out fairly rapidly, one after another - that's not pretentious, that's ambitious."

Also, many Shaw brothers films were released in parts like this, so once again this makes sense in terms of what he is trying to do.

I'm glad that he split the movies up. There's a reason for editing. GOOD, nay, GREAT scenes get edited all the time... know why? Time constraints.

Some movies that shall remain nameless are too fucking long.

    Comments:

    1. The whole "out of sequence" thing. A good point was made earlier about it being pointless, but I have to go one further. Actually, it hurt the movie in my opinion. The Bride seemed to have a hard time fighting the black chick. For the most part they were evenly matched and The Bride was really getting her ass kicked. Then she flies to Japan and kills what seems to be dozens and dozens of people at once with barely a scratch to show for it (well, aside from the cut on her back that seemed to affect her for all of 10 seconds) in a very unrealistic fight scene (while the first fight tried to be very realistic). Either O-Ren and her army are spaztic retards or the black chick was an amazing fighter. I know the O-Ren fight took place before the fight with the black chick, but having everything out of sequence was really anti-climatic. It just gave the movie a really uneven feel, having her hardest and most realistic fight first. It's a gimmick that worked well in Pulp Fiction but Quinten's overrelying on it now.

    2. The anime sequence was cool, but the artwork and animation was horrible. The whole thing felt very cheap.

    3. The action scenes were "eh". Kinda spaztic, too much going on, too many akward pauses, the combat was sloppy, too many fast cuts disguising the actor's actual lack of combat skills. That part when Uma was rolling around chopping off people's feet was retarded.

    4. Soundtrack blew. The song played during the aforementioned rolling around/foot cutting scene was bizarre and pretty stupid.

    5. As for people calling it the "goriest R-rated movie ever made"...um, NO. Not even close.

    6. And yes, the dialogue was boring, uninteresting and lame, for the most part.

    7. The first hour of the movie bored the shit out of me. Slow, slow, slooooow. You're not really given any reason to feel for The Bride, either, other than that she was shot and wants revenge. You could sum up the plot is 3 seconds. I realize that's how it was in many of the movies that he's attempting to pay homage to, but most of those movies didn't have the super-long drawn-out scenes Kill Bill has, either. They ran at a fact clip and the fact that the plot was super-thin was covered up by non-stop action. Not so here. Also, giving O-Ren a backstory and not giving The Bride one was a big mistake. I know they're supposed to reveal Uma's backstory in Vol. 2 but who gives a fuck? I'm not buying into that Matrix Reloaded "oh, it'll all make sense when the next movie is released" bullshit. Matrix Revolutions could be so good that it'll make me shoot rainbow-colored turds out of my asshole, but it won't make me like Reloaded any more than I do now. I'm all for leaving things open for a sequel but movies should be able to stand on their own so they give you a reason to want to see the sequel. So, we have to wait until Vol. 2 for a reason to care about The Bride? Give me a break.

I guess I'm just annoyed because I really thought I'd like this movie...oh, well.
I don't normally say this, as I feel it's used as a crutch in so many arguments, but... Well, you completely missed the point.

I mean, the music when she's rolling on the floor feels out of place? No shit!
So I forced my hands in my pockets and felt with my thumbs and gallantly handed her my very last piece of gum.

  9. I know my opinion will probably go on deaf ears. I enjoyed the movie, I had higher expectations going in, then when I came out. Dissapointed ... kinda. But then after reflection I got to appreciate what QT did. The whole feel was like what everyone else said ... '70's Japanese martial arts movies. Heck the gore was on par to the Bangkok style ... the fountain of blood, the easy of how the sword sliced through flesh. Stuff like that mirrored the cheesy Bangkok movies. Those movies had heads exploding, by clapping your hands together. Fists going through chests and ripping out your heart. Things of that nature. I think he was paying homage not to just Japanese, but the whole Asian film culture. He wasn't centering on ... swordplay(japanese), or fight scenes(HK), or gore(bankok, malasyia, vietnamese, etc) No ... he centered on the whole Asian film industry.

The anti-climatic argument I think is valid. The fighting out of order is a neat idea.
And I think ... ssbomberman had it correct
ssbomberman ... Perhaps he is trying to be anti-climactic on purpose, after years of films that simply build to a climax -- as most Asian films do.
The next Kill Bill will probably do more of the same. But again its neat to have focus on the bad guys rather the good guys. Actually the question to ponder is ... whos really bad? Is Uma the bad guy in the flick? Cause of all the air time the "BAD" guys are getting? Think about it. In most Movies ... the Good guy gets the backstory, the reasons why he/she are doing what their doing. But in this movie and case ... the "BAD" guys are getting the airtime. So, maybe the question that QT is asking is ... Whos the bad guy? I mean she kills Vivica Fox's character in front of the daughter, whos 8 or 9 years old! I mean in reality ... we would want her head! But in this movie we are like yeah! I mean Vivica Fox's character even sets the time and date for the battle(btw: I thought that scene was hilarious). Yes, she tries to shot Uma with the "Kaboom" cereal(btw: that was hilarious as well ... should have seen the foreshadowing on that one.) ... But still Vivica's character had ... morals. Maybe she missed cause she saw her daughter. Who knows, but thats a question to ponder ... Who's the real bad guy?

AND ... WHY did Bill try and kill her? What did she do that was so wrong? Or what did she know? We know she was pregnant with Bill's baby ... wheres the baby? Is Vivica's daughter ... really Uma's? I mean at first I thought is was okay, but after thinking about it ... I loved it. Its like Pulp Fiction ... if it was a two parter. We would all be arguing as to why Bruce Willis's character(damn I forgot his name ... and others as well.) had so much airtime and such. Heck PT was shot out of order. AND TO CLARIFY ... almost ALL movies are truly shot out of order! Unlike the movie CROW ... most movies shoot the last scene first then work their way backwards. WHY? Time contraints and filming schedules. So, who knows the reasons ... I'm really starting to appreciate this movie more and more as I write this diatribe.
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

  10. More comments on Japanese release of KB from another movie board:

"Just got back from seeing this. Blake might be right, in that Sophie does get "sliced and diced" a little in the trunk: Uma cuts off her other arm. Is this really missing in the American version? It didn't seem terribly shocking after all the arterial spray and dismemberment in the preceding scenes"

Damn, So poor Sophie gets both arms hecked off. Too bad QT didnt keep it in US release.
