Thread: Devil Hunter Yoko

    Opa Walking Devil Hunter Yoko

NCS' Mega Drive Devil Hunter Yoko game gets mentioned on occasion at TNL but I don't think it has had its own thread before. For those that don't know, it's a platform game similar to the Valis series. While the gameplay isn't spectacular, it gets the job done and I always really liked the game due to its atmosphere.

I'm also wondering about the two PC Engine CD Devil Hunter games. They don't look import-friendly. Is there too much Japanese text to enjoy them?

So who's a fan of these games?

  2. I haven't played the MD one though it looks right up my street. I *seem* to remember one of the PCE ones being not an action game. I could be wrong, I've played too many unplayable PCE games to remember.

Thanks for the screens because I've never even seen the MD version.

  3. That happens to be my very first MD import purchase (first video game import purchase actually) . Hasn't really aged well, doesn't hold a candle to Valis.

Both PCE games are adventure/digital comics from the looks of it.

  5. This game is better than any Valis game. NCS also did Gley Lancer and Langrisser 2 for the Genesis.

  6. Really, better than Valis III? In what way?

Yep, NCS made quite a few good games in the 16-bit era. And a few crap games like Double Dungeons.

I would place MD Devil Hunter above the first couple Valis games and around the same league as Valis 3 and 4.

Valis 3 is a 7/10 at best. The level design in most Valis game seems to be done by whoever designed Donkey Kong Country

Still they have their redeeming features, but I greatly prefer DHY.

  9. Bah, you're selling probably my favorite Genesis game short. I guess the level design in Valis III isn't as varied and multi-tiered as Devil Hunter, but I'll settle for that over muddy control and unintuitive play mechanics.

I'd pick Alisa Dragoon for a better-than-Valis game that shares a similar theme.

  10. I'd probably rate Alisia Dragoon above this game. The 3 Shinobi's, and Bloodlines are also better side scrolling action plattformers.
