Thread: M$ tried to buy Nintendo

Nintendo can keep operating for a long time, right, Gamevet. They're not doing anything wrong.

But, they're wasting their potential. Nintendo's a Ferrari F50 being driven by a 90-year old woman. A 90-year old woman can get everywhere she wants to go in a Ferrari F50, but why? Sell the F50, buy a cushy Lexus or something, and she can spend the $450,000 left over on hair treatments and sweaters for her dog.

Nintendo's way of operating worked when video games were a relatively small, self-contained business that didn't involve all that much competition. The status quo was all that mattered. As video games get even more of a big-business status, the 90-year old lady in the F50 is going to be pushed out so that F50 stops going to waste. It's just how business works, I think.

Actually, Nintendo is driving the Lexus. They have the money from the Ferrari sitting in the bank, so when the Lexus eventually does die, they can purchase another car. Those companies with more money tied up in assets, than money in the bank, take the chance that the Ferrari will hold its value in the market and have a lesser option of using the Ferrari if it does blow a rod.

So, like the past, when Nintendo was a card manufacturing company, they had the money to change their business from a card making company, into a videogame giant. When the day comes that videogames are'nt the big thing, Nintendo can take that money and invest in another market.

Oh! Oh! Can I kill him? Please?!

The N64 was in no way crushed by the PSX. Also realize that Nintendo is still the world's most prolific console (and handheld) software publisher, just about doubling second-place EA. I'm not sure what effect the prerelease natures of the new consoles has on the analysis, but I'm sure it's more complex then "they're not out yet, so we can ignore them."

  4. I know all about this. Its funny that this only came out recently, I think the editors for these gaming sites are slow readers.

Anyway, buy the book, its a great read. I know I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

Aren't there three PlayStations out there for every N64? I mean sure Nintendo made a killing profit-wise, but the system itself wasn't terribly popular.

  6. I get where stone is going with this

but like i said to him

i dont think its going to happen (nintendo being bought out)

I also kinda agree with Miyamoto and Yamauchi on a possible crash

    why

well you have 3 consoles out there now
its rumored Atari and Matsushita have consoles in the work and such ad claims of the PS3 comingo ut sooner than 2004

it thats true its just going to be too much

maybe a crash wont happen in America but i dont know with the way sales have been lately i wouldnt be surprised if one happened in Japan soon

and i think if one did Nintendo and a few of the Big 3rd parties would be some of the few Survivors of it over there based soley on how much they have in the bank

again perhaps nintendo really does beleive a crash is coming soon and thats why they are putting so much in the bank to survive it

i dont think its that high of a difference

but i think the point people are making is would you rather have 5 million systems out there and have only turned 1 million in profit off them or would you rather have 2.5 million units out there and turned 5 million profits off them

i beleive it wasnt long after launch that each N64 sold actually made nintendo money instead of losing it

Atari (Infogrames) couldn't possibly turn out a system unless it really suckered some electronic giants into it.

As for the industry crash, I don't think we'll see one in the classic sense. People like games, it's human nature, if anything we'll see an evolution to something many will seperate from current videogames. I guess then you could shout "industry crash".

  9. Burgundy - your team is going down!! They don't call Darcy Tucker "Sideshow Bob" for nothing, you know. He really is freakin' nuts. Game 7, time for some Old-Time hockey...

Matsushita actually tried to enter the gaming market once with M2 (the follow-up to the 3DO), but they pulled the plug due to their unwillingness to compete with Sony in the videogame market. It was shame too, because it looked like an interesting console, almost as powerful as the Dreamcast or even the PlayStation 2. And that version of D2 seem interesting despite the hokey premise.

Anyway, most game companies in Japan are having trouble selling games that aren't part of a popular franchise and most people has been turning to older Famicom games just to get their gaming fix and it's hard to blame them though.
