Thread: Astro Boy

  1. Seen a screen shot in Edge magazine of Astro boy going up against that huge spider robot that was in the GBA version. i pre-ordered this sucker there and then. Sega has stated that this game will be aimed at "casual users". Suppodedly one button does all of the attacks.

UGA did Rez right? That game didn't use too many buttons and still ate up the first three months of 2002 way back when.

  2. Is astro boy still the kid with the pointy cowlick, black underwear and rocket boots? I remember watching the old one way the fuck back in the 80s when I was a little pup on TV.

That's him. He's had 3 TV series, one in the 60s, one in the 80s, and one last year. I guess he'll get another in 2023

  4. News

Astro Boy is coming along nicely. It's one of my most anticipated titles of 2004.

It's basically the best physics engine currently available to videogames. It allows people to twist and bend like they should and uses calculations based on how they're falling and what they're hitting to judge how they land (which also almost completely removes people clipping through walls), instead of a specific set of pre-made animations. Once you play a game that uses those physics every other game that does it "traditionally" looks extremely stiff and robotic. I had the bad timing to play Kill.Switch right after Max Payne 2, which made the former look like a high school animation effort every time someone died.

You won't notice the difference until you've seen it and then tried going back. It's painful to leave behind.

personally i have a lot more faith in UGA (which is who is developing astroboy and were before the merger -- though what amount of it remains truly UGA is up for debate) than any of the wow teams in sega wow.

as for havok, it's a physics engine not a GAME engine. i.e. you drop the tech into whatever engine you are using yourself to develop the game, i believe. so the actual game engine for astroboy is going to be whatever sonicteam is developing.

  7. If you haven't seen them yet, check out the commercials on this page.

It looks dope. I dunno about the one button thing though. Astroboy has a lot of tech.

  8. I'm more excited about the GBA version. The PS2 Astroboy just looks so empty and barren.

And I thought everyone knew Sonic Team is supposed to be hated now and Treasure is overrated

  9. I must admit I more excited about the GBA game as well, but that's more because the GBA version looks especially extraordinary. I still think they both look great so far.

  10. the PS2 version looked very pretty and possibly very fun; dunno. it reminded me of nothing so much on a glance as ZOE, believe it or not. there was only a five minute or so rolling tape loop, so it's not as if i've played it or really got an in-depth look at it, however.
