    spicy!

  5. I've had the Droid for a week, it's replaced an LG Voyager so here goes:

    It's neat!

First, the build quality is great. Feels like a tank (it's on the heavier side of phones, to be sure). The slide out keyboard is super smooth and has a nice click to it when it's all the way out. The keyboard itself takes some getting used to. It's flush so it's easy to hit more than one key at a time, it'll take some time to really get comfortable with it (there is no number row, gotta hit alt and then one of the top keys).

The screen is bad ass. 3.7 inches, double the resolution of the iphone. This makes everything really sharp and websites look really good (loads fast too, 3G is great. The browser works really well for me so far). You have 3 home screens to plop widgets and apps to. There is a tray on the bottom of the first home screen that you can pull up that holds everything on the phone. There is a ton of stuff in the app store, seems like it has everything you could think of. Easy to download, installation is automatic. There is a Facebook and YouTube app that comes on the phone, both of which are awesome. Also on the homescreen is a google search bar. Either type in what you want, or talk and BAM, google all up in your shit. Addresses, directions, phone numbers instantly. Totally sweet.

Android 2.0 is kinda buggy right now. The screen feels really solid but it can fail to register taps more often than I'd like. The onscreen keyboard works best in landscape since the keys are much bigger. The auto correct and T9 like suggestions are really good. Again it'll take some time to get the feel for it, but you can type quickly once you do. I've had the phone reboot on me twice for no reason and one time the Weather Channel app would load instead of my text messages for some goofy reason.

Speaking of texts, it treats them like chat sessions. Each person you talk to a log is kept. Touch on their name, and the messages you have written display like a chat room (Persons name: text then Me: text). I really dig it. When you get a text, the alert appears in an notification bar at the top. It shows who it's from and a little bit of the text. Pull it down and you can jump right into the text. The phone only alerts you with a audible tone when it comes in, if you let it sit, a green light in the top right blinks to give you the heads up.

Haven't used Google Nav yet so I can't comment yet.

Battery life seems normal for a smartphone, the more shit you use, the faster the battery drains. The phone came with a USB cable and adapter to use the cable in a wall socket. There is a 16GB SD card that comes with it and when you "mount" the card when you connect the phone to your computer it appears as an external storage device. Drag and drop music and pictures to it.

The external speaker is LOUD. Music player works fine, if it looks basic. You can have music playing while you do other stuff.

The camera works well for the most part. I've taken some blurry as hell pics, but that seems to be due lighting it doesn't like (there is a flash though). I've messed with the video camera a little bit and it seems to work as well as the camera. No real complaints yet, I still have a lot to try out though.

It's got all the trimmings you'd expect, bluetooth, wi-fi, all easy to set up. It's on VZW so call quality is sweet too.

If you have any questions, ask. I think that covers the basics.

Let me know how well the google nav works if you use it. I'm debating if I want to wait for a probable 2.0 update for my phone or just buy a nav program.

  7. Thanks! I'd like to hear how the Google Docs/GMail/Google Voice work with it, if you don't mind?

  8. Prior to getting the droid, I didn't have a gmail account. Now I do! When you get the phone, it asks you for your gmail info. If you don't have one, you make it. So at startup, your phone is tied into you google account. It syncs your mail and calendar and such. There's an app on the phone to check you gmail, and one to check other email (iirc you can keep track of 15 email accounts).

It works as well as you could want it to. Uses a separate tone for email notification, shit loads quick, it's easy to see and reply to emails. It's a google phone, I'm sure they had their software and tools running on it first before anything else.

    I don't have Google Voice, so I can't comment.
