Thread: Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

  1. Co-op is the fucking shit. It adds a millions times the fun of two player versus racing. The woman and I played for hours and *she* wanted to play more. That's jacked up. I even taught her to slide boost and we started kicking some real ass.

My old habits die hard. I keep trying to jump over little gaps with the R trigger. The sliding is different and I keep sliding off ledges.

    I like it.

It's different. And it's not MK64. But I like it.

I still need to figure out how to unlock The Man.

    The Man = Toad

  2. Six, Gamefaqs.

btw, how did you do slide dashes in the previous games? I was playing with a friend and he said you didn't have to wiggle the stick in the other versions, but it's been so long I can't remember.

  3. what pair are you guys using? i've been going back and forth for the perfect pair.

  4. I got this game today, good stuff.

It gets progressively more crazy and challenging with higher CC's. The partner switching is a neat add-on play mechanic but I'm not used to it yet since its a tad intrusive while in a heat of a race but it certainly adds another dynamic to your advantage.

I wish the hop from the 64 was kept in there since it made the karts feel more nimble and you could hop over certain objects easily. It feels weird to just go into a powerslide without it but what I do is before approaching a corner I keep the L/R button depressed while turning so that when I turn I only have to move the stick to the opposite direction while changing the spark color. It sucks that the orange sparks don't give you a medium boost like the orange smoke trails in 64 but eh whatever.

The track design picks up and gets cooler after Wario Stadium, the higher the CC's the more shortcuts and bigger the course. I must say that Mario Kart 64's tracks are better since they felt much bigger and longer whereas the DD courses are short but still pretty sweet. The courses just leave me hanging for more if they were just bigger and more detailed it would be great. I haven't tried multi-player yet, just messing around with the regular single player.

Graphically its really colorful and crisp, but I think the GC could do better character models and kart rendering. Why is Mario's hat still not perfectly round or lip synching done better than an animated texture? Why no fur effect on Donkey Kong and better foliage/crazy waterfalls/steamboats in DK's level?

I don't want anything hyper realistic but just showing what the GC can do. So mostly the courses borrow a good amount from 64's while adding stuff from Sunshine and their own little things(I dig the cruise boat and the highway ones).

    Minor gripes.

Musicwise its nothing special. A bit too muffled for a GC game as it could be much clearer and better executed. At the same time I can't say its not fitting for this type of game but again, they have no excuse to ignore the Gamecube's capabilities when other developers are doing great stuff with it.

So anyway I'm having fun with it, so far I'd give it a 8.5-9/10 eithout trying multi.

BTW I got the MK DD game with the demo. Its a pretty nice demo here's my impressions:

TMNT: Disappointing compared to the Genesis Hyperstone Heist(my favorite version)/Turtles in Time SNES games. It could definitely do without the speech since it gets repetetive. Environments should be more detailed and interactive and there should be thugs as well as different colored foot soldiers.

I have a feeling TMNT 2, if one is ever made, should have more characters from the cartoon assuming they include Krang, Shell-Head, Fly Baxter Stockman, Rat King, that cool as hell Pharoah robot more mutants and all the classic stuff updated. Also being able to buy moves and such, 4 player and it would be a killer game.

Sonic Heroes: Awesome demo, I liked it alot. Sometimes I just want to play only one character like Sonic throughout the whole level without the different somewhat mandatory character switching. That 3 character team play is still pretty cool since gameplay is varied but fun and actually looks damn badass when they do team up moves like on the Dark side.

Looks VERY nice graphically. Vibrant, smooth, clean and runs pretty fast. I really dig the level design too even if it can get pretty hectic.

Star Wars Rebel Strike: Fun on-foot level but for some reason when I winch myself up to strike with the lightsaber, the camera gets stuck on the inside of the walker and I can plant the bomb since it doesn't let me do anything but look around. I definitely want to get the full game after I finish up Rogue Leader.

The 1080: Avalanche video shows the game looking VERY good so far. It seems to be copying the lighting effect SSX3 has when character models are in ice areas but the avalanche's themselves look cool too. The tricks look pretty complex to pull off as well since balance is an important added element.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles looks beautiful I'll buy it the day its out but I'm still iffy on the story, I hope its not too open ended.

  6. The graphics and size of the levels are certainly letdowns. I'm pretty sure this game could've come out last year, maybe even at launch and still look the same.

  7. I'm using Mario and Luigi in Luigi's kart so far. I will probably switch it up for Yoshi and Bowser.

  8. I use Para-Trooper and Baby Luigi in the Para Wing car.

I think the game is golden, and maybe MK for GBA spoiled me, but I just want more tracks. I know there is mirror mode but that just dosen't make up for it.

Espically after how awesome every track was in the special cup, it just left me wanting alot more from the game. Even though 20 of the old tracks in MK for advance were just from the snes MK, this version still leaves me wanting alot more.
