Yeah. Either turn down the item appearances or turn them OFF.
After more play time - with both 4 player multi vs and co op - and after playing the entire series over again (snes,gba,n64). This is the best Mario Kart yet. Believe it.

The item frequency options are only for Vs. Play. That's it.
Carnage remains in 1P.
I'll preface this by stating that I haven't played MKDD!! yet.
So far, most of the complaints I'm hearing are the same complaints everyone was leveling at MK64 when if came out. "The tracks suck, and they're too big", "Battle Mode sucks because the levels are way too big" (small now), "Not enough tracks and characters", "Shallow single player mode", "It's way too floaty", ect. Years later and MK64 is considered an all time classic.
From what I've heard Nintendo listened to people's complaints about MK64 and A) tightened up the control/turning to be more like the SNES game, B) reduced the size of the battle arenas to be more like the SNES game, C) Made the tracks shorter and more focused like the SNES tracks, D) added in a brilliant new co-op 2 per kart mechanic. I just think it's really funny that everyone was so dissapointed in MK64, the game that so many people now hail as classic. Go to gamerankings and check out the reviews of MK64, they read almost WORD FOR WORD like the reviews of DD. "Dissapointing, no innovation, tracks suck, battle mode sucks".
Having not yet played DD!! myself, and having always been an MK battle mode addict, how is the battle mode in DD!! ? So far nobody's given any detailed impressions of battle mode and the various battle mode arenas, how DD!!'s battle mode compares and contrasts to the previous games, ect. I'd appreciate some thoughts on Battle Mode, somebody push me towards the waves of a Nintendorgasm
You didn't have to say that, no one pays attention to a word you say about Nintendo games anyway.Originally Posted by SpoDaddy

But the same thing could happen in the other games, so it's no fault of DD.
The battle modes are pretty fun but so far my friend and I are not having as much fun with it as we did with Mario Kart 64's arenas.Originally Posted by SpoDaddy
There's three types: Balloon Battle(same as the 64 version), Shine Thief(you have to keep the shine the longest until it counts down) and Bob-omb blast where you get only bombs to blast the hell out of your opponent. I think all the modes are pretty cool but I like Balloon Battle/Bob-omb blast the most.
The actual battle arenas are hit and miss for me.
In the vs the Cookie Land is kind of meh, seems to try to mimic 'the big donut' level in 64 but the arena is too small and it doesn't have the danger of the lava.
The Block City arena is pretty cool since its a bit bigger and corner sliding while using an item is fun, but it doesn't have the cool block connecting ramps 'Block Fort' 64 had which made it so fun since you could defend any area and call it your own. The actual blocks in the levels are also disappointing since they are just there for show.
Pipe Plaza is probably the best one in that it has warp pipes and some grating to have a level more for the 'death from above' situations.
Then there's the Nintendo Gamecube level which is cool since you play atop an actual Gamecube but still too enclosed to give any variety in hide & seek type gameplay.
So overall Mario Kart 64's battle arenas were far better and I enjoyed those the most out of the Mario Kart series. While these in DD aren't too bad they just need more actual levels/floors to the arenas to keep it interesting and they should be bigger.
What it lacks in battle modes makes up for it in the super fun co-op 2 player game. Its one innovation I think made the game much, much better. You and a buddy can play on one cart and switch to driving/shooting when you both agree to press Z. The other real cool thing is if your buddy is driving and he/she can't make the turn or if an oncoming danger is heading at you, you can put a little oomph into the cornering and help him out as well as watching his/her back.
Its really nice that you have to use the spark dashing as a cooperative effort(although my dumbass friend still hasn't been able to work these type of dashes since 64 so I always have to help him out on that).
So I think the real fun is in the co-op while the battle modes are there if you want to just have blast with more friends in the 'pass the controller' type thing.
No it isn't.Originally Posted by SpoDaddy
And Will, there's another Battle Arena you haven't unlocked yet, possibly because you SUCK AT MARIO KART! HOLLA! It's Luigi's Mansion.
And yeah, co-op is indeed good fun. I don't HATE HATE HATE the game like I did the first few times I played it... I agree with the growing on me thing. But it's still easily the worst of the Karts, and Battle Mode will never be good.
Anyone notice that you can steal balloons in Battle Mode? Yeah, might be cool if the arenas didn't suck a fat ass. I swear if you can unlock Block Fort this game would change from a red-headed stepchild to my most played in seconds.
HA! HA! I AM USING THE INTERNET!!1

I think I did that but I'm not too sure. I rammed into my opponent and took away his balloon but its probably not the method you're talking about.Anyone notice that you can steal balloons in Battle Mode?
