Just got home with a Retrocon and gave it some play time. My initial impressions:
Very good construction and response. Not the typical cheap 3rd party pad at all. Much quality to be had here.
On PS and PS2 games: Great D-pad. Very responsive on games I tried like Mobile Light Force and the most recent Dodonpachi. Buttons have a great feel. I love the analog sticks. Stiffer than the 1st party and very comfortable, if small. Played some Need For Speed HP2 and the steering and acceleration worked fine.
Now the bad news: Don't use this for anything but a PS or PS2. It did not work well with my PC via the USB adapter (severe lag, not able to detect multiple quick presses) or my Cube via my other adapter (everything was stuck on permanent "turbo", even the d-pad directions and analog sticks). Doh! I really wanted to use this thing for GBA and emulators. I know it is not the two adapters because a Dual Shock works flawlessly on both of them. Oh well.
Great for PS2, doesn't seem to work on adapters.

This is a great idea. I love my xbox & cube but started with ps controllers back in the day and it seems to be the only controller i can seem to hold with out getting hand cramp.

I just got this last week, and beyond the lighting throughout it and the shoulder buttons, I love it. I think the d-pad is better than the DS 2's, and the face buttons are neat, being able to control them all from in-between the buttons is neat. The rubber gripping is nice, and the analog sticks are far more comfortable to use than the DS 2's.

They're $12 at Circuit City now, and it's worth the $20 that I paid for a week ago at CC. I'll post a link to my review of this thing once it goes up.

I actually did this mod today, got the basics from the idiot's guide to superguns. I had 2 spare saturn controllers, one having a more responsive d-pad and the other having more responsive buttons (the amount of spring-back). So, I opened them both up and swapped parts to make one perfect saturn pad and one not so perfect. I accidentally swapped buttons (grey for blue), but it looked cool so I switched the start and L/R buttons. I'm sure someone has done the color swapping before, but I've never seen it.
I might post more details in the tech forum or over at shmups if anyone is interested. I basically wired it to a DB15 extension cable, and that thing plugs into either my supergun or specific boxes for each system that contain that system's pcb. Now i just need to add some auto fire like Matt's saturn pads.
