5 bucks now? Awesome!
Just picked one of these up from Best Buy. They have em for $5 each. Don't get them if you like fighting games. I played some 3rd Strike on this and it's IMPOSSIBLE to do an EX move without mapping 2 punches or 2 kicks to the shoulder buttons. Seems like it's only able to recognize one face button at a time or something. Other than that, the controller isn't that bad. I like the analog sticks because they're not nearly as loose as the Dual Shocks. The D-Pad coulda been better too, but you get used to it after awhile. Same with the shoulder buttons. Totally worth the $5. Just crappy for fighting games. Probably wouldn't get it for the original $20 that they sold these for because Dual Shocks are only $25 nowadays.
Another interesting discovery I found was that the right analog stick can act as the face buttons of the controller. Playing Megaman X4, moving the right analog stick up, down, left, or right will act as the Triangle, Cross, Square, and Circle buttons respectively. On a normal dual shock controller, the sticks are disabled. So it's possible to play MMX4 with just the 2 sticks (left for movement, right for face buttons). I think it only works on old non-analog games for PS1, though I'm not sure since I only tested this on that game. Dual shocks just disables the analog sticks so you can't use them.
Yep, I picked up two a few weeks ago just because they're so cheap. One of the best third party controllers I've used.
Cool, now they're $5 at Best Buy and Circuit City. Maybe I'll pick one up soon as a gift. I didn't know that about the right analog stick though, very handy. I really love the pad, minus the shoulder buttons, which are hard to use regularly.

As for these Retrocons... The black dot on the folder says I've posted in here before but I don't remember what I said....But I'm sure it was something along the lines of "this controller rocks". It's honestly the first 3rd party pad of any sort that I've run into in 20+ years of gaming that is better than the first party pad. It feels solid like a rock, has silky smooth sticks, a real D-pad, and that warm fuzzy NES look.
I would have never bet that Mad Catz could do it, but there it is.
I knew they'd be crap for fighting games just from the look of em. Just didn't realize that you can't even do a simple EX Hadouken with em when I tested it out! Still very good though for $5. I'm probably gonna go back to Best Buy and get 2 more if they're not gone yet. Got a $10 gift card to waste and we need more controllers!
I've never had any problems with multiple button presses or fireball moves or anything, to be honest. Maybe you got a dud? Either way, I own three of 'em now (the one I bought when tehy first came out, and the two new ones) and I barely use the DS2. I'm even used to the shoulder buttons.
these are great, especially for platformersbut ive been through a couple. the sticks are pretty flimsy, so if they are handled badly in any way, the stick will hose up. I had one where the spring got messed up and you couldnt move, and another that would automatically move you to the right if you didnt touch it. I tried taking it apart to fix it but it did no good
That certainly sucks, especially since the sticks are (to me) the most impressive part of the pad. I enjoy using them far more than the regular dual shock sticks. They were a Godsend in the Marble Madness areas in I-Ninja.
