    I'm visiting my dad in Baltimore for the weekend and went to check out the local blockbuster. Now compared to my blockbuster back at home, this place is amazing and has a shit load more than I have ever seen at any blockbuster. As I was browsing, I came across this Japanese film called Versus. The cover looked pretty cool, and the description wasn't half bad, so I picked it up.

    the plot is about an escaped prisoner who runs into this ancient forest. Here he faces, zombies and a group of undead henchmen of this guy who wants to open the dark power of the forest. Its a pretty good movie, and for any who can find it at their blockbuster, I'd recomend picking it up.

  2. it's japanese Highlander basically. good film, picture quality looked a little assy, but i ain't complaining. if you find a copy of the special edition, it comes with a second disc with extras, one of which being a prequel of sorts to the film. it only stars the two "detectives", busting the chops of some bystander.

  3. Another viewer discovers Versus Nowdays its much easier, since it was finally released on the official US disk

    While not flawless, Versus is still kick ass, lowbudged excercise in extreme filmaking. While the story or acting wont be winning any awards, the energy of some parts, crazy zombie and action scenes, and cool style will have you glued to the screen, if you like this kind of things.

    Just like Kill Bill, Versus is not for everyone, and where some people will have a great time watching it, others will be left wondering why this mediocre movie gets soo much praise.

  4. Funny you mention Kill Bill, cause I watched this right after seeing Kill Bill which I think added to the enjoyment of the movie.

  5. Fine fine flick... it's a bit slow at times but a hell of alot of fun. I've got both the Japanese DVD and the new US Special Edition.
    You sir, are a hideous hermaphroditical character which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman.

  6. Yeah, I'm surprised to have found this at Blockbuster one day. My brother and I thought it was great, pretty cheesy and low-budget, but inventive and funny. Some of the choreography was pretty darn slick too. It had enough good ideas to get the imagination going.

    Plus, you have to love the almost randomness of the characters. That "flamboyant" guy cracked me up, and his alter-ego later was so ridiculous it was hilarious. I also liked the stoic, super-typical "machismo" of the lead character, and the way he deals with his women.

    If there's one thing I cannot abide, however, it's laser-sights on swords.

    Yeah i was a bit confused at the end, someone care to explain that?
    The less you think about it, the more beautiful the randomness.

    The main guy was not who he was in previous lives an more prone to evil acts. After defeating his brother he went on to gain more and more power and destroyed most of the world. The cycle of them resurrecting continued, but the henchmen sided with the now-evil main guy and the once evil devil-like guy had now come for a reason unknown (To stop him? To take over what he had done? To make him a subordinate?). The main guy wanted him to tell how to open the path to hell so that he could rule there as well. Quite possibly the main guy had become more evil and powerful then the devil guy ever could have been, but they don't really say. Maybe the sequel will explain it, if it's not a totally new story.

  8. Ah ok i understand now. So there is going to be a sequel eh? Very nice. So are there any other good japanese films similar that i should look into?

  9. Well, Kitamura working on Twin Snakes, and Versus 1.5 put the start of shooting of Versus 2 on hold for a while

    But his Azumi is coming to R2 dvd next month
