By the way, what gas company do you use? I use AMOCO (newly named BP Connect) on my '95 FORD Taurus (regular) and I use MOBILE on my parents '03 Honda Odyssey (premium).
Where I grew up, we had a ton of full serve stations... well, that was 12 or more years ago. More or less, the whole area becamse self serve, but there are still a few places that'll pump for you. Tipping seems unheard of, though... I've never done it the few times I've been there, and nobody else I know does. More often than not, though, we pump our own gas, because the best gas station in the NJ/PA/NY/Ohio (at least, I think) area is Sheetz, and if you live anywhere near one, you really should check it out. Their made-to-order food is great.
Since moving to Boston, though, I save a lot of money that'd otherwise go to keeping my car running, heheh. Too bad walking isn't an option in more non-urban areas.

I'm from Oregon, and it's true that you can't pump your own gas, but not because of those reasons. It's some sort of lobby or union or something to provide jobs...used to be that all the stations were full service, but, with the advent of all the quicky chains, it's pretty pointless now.Originally Posted by maruchan
Drove up to Washington once, though, bought some gas. Took like 2 seconds to figure it out.
edit: Oh yeah, there's no tipping whatsoever.
Growing up in NJ I never pumped my own gas... so the first road trip I took with friends (all the way to Nova Scotia) was funny. We got to the gas station and had to figure out what to do. WTF!
Over the years I learned how to do it, especially after I left NJ. It's not hard after all... but I never really got used to it. Also, when it's -20° and freezing outside, it's not fun to leave the nice warm car to pump your gas.
NJ is ahead of the curve here. They fill you tank and it costs way less than most places in the US (or used to anyway, it's been a while since I was back home).
....
Oh yeh, and I never gave a tip or saw anyone give a tip. My dad is the kind of guy who does not just believe in tipping, but over-tipping. So if he does not do it I would say it's pretty unheard of in those parts.
the only thing i hate about getting gas is paying for it. im coming up with a way around that, tough..![]()

Yea, its a new van. New van = high quality gas. If it was getting older than I'll put cheap gas.Originally Posted by Rhydant
I remember when I first got to college.... All of these freshmen from NJ showed up with their parrents for move-in day and there was chaos at the gas stations since all these people didn't know what to do with the pumps.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to laugh at New Jersey for a while for the full-service gas stations, the jughandle turns, the traffic circles, and the Giants (who don't even belong to NJ).
