CORRECTION: Play all the free games SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT IN THE GAMECUBES RAM that you want.

You'll never play Metroid Prime or games that require constant disc streaming this way... unless the people that do this can make the transfer speed of the ethernet exactly the same as the disc access speed.
Quick zephyrs blow, vexing daft Jim.

  2. I tried getting it to work this evening and all I could get running was a homebrew pong game. It's a pain in the ass.

    Oh god shut up =(

I thought you stoped doing this.

Anyway, I could also point out that there's been some very solid software sales for Xbox despite the ease to pirate the systems games. Does that mean anything? No. Who gives a shit.

Gamecube can be pirated? Ok, I figured it was going to happen eventually. Hooray for independant inginuity.

Because appearantly it's pretty damn buggy =/

Nice info though, I'm sure it takes a monster of a system (probably on the info page but I was too lazy to sort through).

  4. The only problem I see with this is the timing. The GC just hit $99 a week ago and news like this will spread fast, possibly getting a lot of people to purchase a GC solely for pirating. If this had happened six months ago or a couple months from now I don't think it would have quite the same effect, but with the price drop followed by this could be bad news for Nintendo.

Or I could be completely wrong and it could affect nothing at all. We'll see.

In any case, this really is a brillant hacking job, I definately applaud the effort of whoever made this even if I feel the effect is harmful.

  5. I think it'll affect nothing. What really hurts is large scale pirateing and this does not have the potential to be large scale. Hell.. even Xbox isn't large scale piracy. Dreamcast was. Nothing was easier to pirate.

Didnt Rogue Leader have some sort of streaming doohickey? You can use that. And F-Zero.

But a home network can be wired at 100megs per second, and the GC data transfer rate is 16megs-25megs per second according to IGN, so... hmmm... Im no math major or anything, but I do believe that 100 is more than 16, and is indeed more than 25.

As for nailing down the transfer speed, I imagine that cant be too hard. For the engine to work properly, youd have to have a constant rate, so its just a matter of trial and error. And you know someone's gonna be willing to do that.

  9. A network transfer is as fast as its slowest componet so, while I've personally been able to test transfers from one point across a grid to another at around 20Gb/s I could not, even given the same expensive equipment make the Gamecube recive data any faster than, what I belive is 10Mbps.

  10. That whole rig-up between the PC and GC sounds way too complicated for Average Joe Gamer to take advantage of, so I really don't think this is gonna have much of an impact on the Cube as far as software piracy goes. The techheads out there would probably have a field day, but not the average shmuck who enjoys a good game of whatever. If it was some sort of easily created media, like mini-dvdr discs combined with cheap DVD-RW drive prices, then it could be time to worry. But as it stands, it could have an impact but I sincerely doubt it'll be a big one (Dreamcast proportions).
