Thread: Forbidden Words of 2004

  1. "Beat them alls."
On a similar note, I'd like to see the word "shmup" erased from history.

This isn't a word, but it should still be forbidden: using a smilie at the end of your post so the person you're speaking to doesn't mistake your joke for an attack. If you have to use a smilie so they aren't offended, that person isn't worth joking with anyway. For everyone else that reads it, it makes you seem like a pussy that's afraid to say what he means.

Not that you're a frequent offender of this, Brisco Bold.

A metrosexual is a straight person who acts gay. See the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" phenomenon and people who subscribe to the magazine Details.

You'll be glad to know at least 7 other people are now refering to that genre of games as "Beat Them Alls."
"Beat Them Alls" sounds ridiculous. What happened to "Beat 'Em Ups"? Not that it's too much better... And yes, "shmups" needs to go away. Forever. I find it hard to believe that anyone who plays shooters would have voluntarily invented that label.

"Extreme" needs to be done with, already. I was at Staples a few weeks ago and saw a package of "Velcro Xtreme." Help.

"Hella" seems like a very West Coast thing, as far as my experience goes. My encounters with it are pretty uncommon... however, here in New England, we have a different abomination. "Wicked." It's pretty new to me, but I must say that it's wicked annoying.

Give some respect to Malcolm Laurie, please.

Some other forbidden words and acronyms from Internet life:

    "IMO", "IMHO", "IMNSHO"

Look, if it wasn't your opinion, why would you have said it? It goes without saying and, much like smilies at the end of your post, makes you look like a pussy.

Okay, so at least he has good taste in games. But if he comes up with any more stupid nicknames I ought to backhand him.

    Oh, my bad, my bad.

  8. "Beat them alls" will never be a forbidden phrase because it originates from rezo, a person who is totally the antithesis of cliche.

that's not really true.....maybe where you're from. i know people that use the term and know what it's actually like in the ghetto. i use the term actually and i do my best not to use it out of context. and you don't actually have to live in the ghetto to be ghetto.

  10. After being exposed to "metrosexual" through this thread and other forums, I agree that it must go. What an awful word. Oh, and I'd be perfectly happy to never read/hear 'my bad' again.

On street slang: Perhaps it's not the slang itself that drives me up the wall, but how it filters to people unrelated to that culture through MTV or whatever. Also, I HATE the intentional destruction of the English language that's common to hip-hop stage names and album/song titles. I think I can understand the intent behind it, but it still drives me nuts.

I think I remember reading the term "beat them all" once years ago on some game-catalog site, but I seem to remember the site being European in origin (perhaps specifically French?) - so I thought it was just a broken form of "beat 'em up." I haven't encountered the phrase enough for it to be annoying, though.

I still run into people who call game cartridges and CD/DVD-ROMS 'tapes'. It's not nearly as common as it was a decade or so ago, but I still can barely suppress the urge to throttle the offending speaker.
