Thread: 150 Suncoast, Sam Goody stores closing in 2004

  1. This wasn't mentioned, but Suncoast is actually owned by Best Buy.

When I worked at BB, I actually did ask why Suncoast's prices are so ass high. I was told because BB sells alot of dvd's so cheap, they use Suncoast's high prices as a way to still make a profit.

I guess it's kicking them in the ass, though.

  2. You got that backwards dude. BB bought out SG (of which Suncoast is a part of) and they attempted to turn the failing SG business model into something that could turn a profit. They obviously failed.

When I asked the girl behind the counter why that was, she said, "So people won't steal them".

Granted, I imagine it must've happened before to take this kind of measure, but I find that action to be a paranoid, blanket statement and highly offensive.

As for Suncoast, yeah, great selection, shitty prices.
I really don't see hot this is wrong. If I owned a business and I had high shrink merchendise I'd do whatever it took to prevent it from being stolen too. In Media Play the only VHS that was kept in security cases were new releases, porn, and "urban cinema" becuase that's what was more likely to be stolen. You can't blame them for doing what they can to not lose money.

Best Buy sold suncoast and musicland this spring. As mentioned earlier, they lots lots of monies in the deal.

  4. I've worked at two different stores and one the prices were so high, I bought most of my stuff at Best Buy. The second store ended up closing because they didn't want to fork up the money the mall was wanting for rent. Bastards, it was actually fun most of the time except for the stupid white thugs comin' in asking, "Ya'll got that new 2Pac." Then they would argue w/us saying that another store had it. As if we weren't up on the new releases. That was the only drawback.

That particular action sends a message that perpetuates a stereotype. So, you're (Sam Goody) telling me no one steals CDs or movies of any other kind? What about software, gadgets, books and the like? Should all "urban" material be put behind counters because "it's more likely to be stolen"?

Don't "urban" customers deserve the right to peruse racks and choose what they want before they buy? Most, meaning 99.99E% actually BUY what they want. If everything is behind a counter, you're basically taking away rights that the "non-urban" customers enjoy.

Just like when people walk past an "urban" youth, no matter if said youth is in a suit or common street clothing, people must check their pockets and bags to make sure they're secure, but if anyone else walks by, hey no problems. Because you know those "urban" kids have nothing but theft on the minds and are masters at the craft

    It's ignorant and sickening.

    Fuck them.

Fuck them and their high-prices in the ear.
Right the fuck on. The Sam Goody in my mall closed and I did little happy dance. Their CDs were $10 more than anywhere else, at least. I never shopped there.

And Suncoast is pretty bad too.

  7. Dolemite how was California?

You know Santa Monica's basically my backyard.

  8. Any place that charges $20 for a CD when other places sell them for $5-8 cheaper deserves to go out of business....

Idiots that do the same thing over and over also perpetuate stereotypes. Go yell at the people stealing rap and hip-hop and tell them to move on to country.

You need to get off that Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Lewis Farrakahn soapbox you're standing on and use your common sense. When I worked for Media Play the only areas of the music section that were allowed to house unsecured merchendise were the Clasical, New Age, and Country CD sections. Why? Because those stood less of a chance of walking out the door. We had limited resources and we couldn't afford to buy security cases for all of the CDs in the store (then go off and buy replacements for the ones that were broken by theives.) We had to choose to take the hit on loosing perhaps 2 Mozart and one Travis Tritt CD over the possibility of loosing a combined 40 Tupac and Pink CDs. It's simple math. You place the extra security measures on the product that needs it. I'm sorry a bunch of kids are walking into stores and stealing Eminem CDs but that's what they're doing, and all your talk of racism isn't going to change that. I'll admit that putting them behind a counter where no one can see them is a little extreme, as SG has a histry of going to outlandish extremes, but it's their store and it's their loss when some kid steals product, so they're allowed to go to that extreme if they deem it neccessary.
