Thread: Epic Games and 3d Realms

  1. I just hope 2K4 isn't an overbaked Halo.

  2. Strange, personally I didn't like UT, but I thought 2003 was pretty decent. Still not nearly as good as id or Valve's offerings, but an improvement over UT.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  3. Tyrian owned my soul for $5. I really really enjoyed that game.

UT shined in Team play but Q3 owned it in DM and 1v1 play. I also like Q3's mod scene better.

UT2K3 was also pretty good in team play and, while the theme might have been taken too far it was still a fun little game that was, at the end of the day, WAY to easy.

Also: If you never played Faceing Worlds CTF in UT you haven't really played UT.

  5. Great thread, Neo.

I used to be a big follower of Epic and played most of their games. This thread has brought to light a few I never even heard about, though.

I wish you went more into ZZT (and it's sequel, Super ZZT). Despite being an obvious attempt to hone in on Kroz's market, they were excellent games, and one of the first games to spawn a really fruitful mod scene. People made that engine do some crazy stuff! That was the real fun of ZZT. There were all kinds of elaborate mods for that thing, with animation, music, hell even physics. I remember one mod that actually ghetto rigged a platformer. Crazy stuff.

There was also a Jazz JAckrabbit 2, but I don't think it was as good as the original.

  6. Epic Pinball was a blast.
My girlfriend has Tyrian lying around her house, though. I'm gonna have to try it, now...

  7. From what I remember of JJ and JJ2 they were both fairly fun, and the level creation was very expansive, don't really remember which was better though..

Frog, I haven't played ZZT yet which is why I didn't say more about it. Jazz 2 was missing something although I don't remember what. I didn't like the smaller sprites.

As for the UT vs Q3A debate, neither side will ever budge. For Deathmatch alone I think UT still kills Q3A.

They weren't smaller, the game just had options for higher res modes that were more "zoomed out". You didn't have to use them.

Castle of the Winds is the greatest game ever.

    So is OMF 2097.
