XP and OSX are stable, if XP is crashing then you fucked it up or your hardware is cheap garbage..

I own both.. I prefer my Mac...
    HAHAHA. *SURE*

My Alienware Area 51M is "cheap garbage"

    Suuuuuureeee. It can't be XP.

  2. Hmmmm.... The need for a Mac, all that RAM, and dual monitors......

Do I detect a Protools setup in the making? If so, be prepaired to spend thousands more on a control surface and preamps and general i/o.

It is fucking stupid and retarded and ridiculous to compare a cobbled-together box that you spend the time building and tweaking to a pre-made computer that you buy and is shipped to your house.

Of course the computer you build is gonna be cheaper.. .BECAUSE YOURE DOING THE WORK! Holy shit, is that like some great surprise to you?

And you know, some people dont like to build computers. I know I dont. My friend did it and his computer gave his problems for a long-ass time... with a pre-built box you dont have to worry about that. Yes there are plenty of wizards out there who will not have said problems but for those of us who arent (and yes, I am one, I have a Dell and I havent had to fuck with it for years and I plan to continue buying pre-built computers) its a lot easier. I can go and buy all the materials for brewing beer and brew 5 galloons of it for myself, and its not too hard... but sometimes you don't wanna brew your own beer, so you pay extra to get it already made.

Please, stop comparing the damn computer you built with parts to an Apple... it is only fair to compare Apple computers to Dells, Compaqs, etc., and when you do that, you will find that Apple computers are very reasonably priced.

Sidez, I like you, but please stop being a fucking retard and open up your eyes and see that comparing the price of the computer you built to the price of a brand new Apple shipped to your house is stupid.
Erm, my argument is that an XP machine can be reliable even when self-built. Even then here in the UK Macs are still far more expensive than a pre-built Dell, maybe it's different in the US.

Besides, anyone can build a PC in a day. If people don't want to spend a few hours of their time doing it then setting up windows and all their apps, and would prefer to pay a lot of money just for aesthetics then so be it. The price argument is valid (against Macs) and the 'XP always crashes!111' one is invalid, that's all i'm saying.

However if some can't be bothered to tweak XP a bit (just little things like using Omega drivers instead of ATi and a properly configured firewall) then they certainly can't bitch that their PC keeps crashing

Cheap? Not a chance. Garbage? Well...

After seeing a lot of my friends get burned by Alienware, I think they're going to smarten up and build their own PCs from now on. For laptops, though, I guess they're the only option for real mobile gaming. Too bad. I hope their production quality is better on those.

Now what use would I have for Proo Tools?

Thats part of it for sure. Although our current setup with Nuendo, and close to $20,000 of plugins works pretty well...

  6. yeah alienware......expensive shit for people who cant build their own. seriously i was all about them before i started building my own and was amazed at the price difference. but you want REALLY overexpensive pc's? look at voodoopc's. friggin joke.

and i really dont see how some of you crash WinXP supposedly as much as you do. ive had it since it came out. my pc is usually on 24/7 and when im using it im either designing, playing games, surfing the net, burning stuff......and have YET to crash it. i guess everyone ive come across that claims they crashed WinXP are those who dont take care of their system file wise. meaning they have hundreds of useless apps installed, some half uninstalled, some that shouldnt be installed with others and so on. really, if you take even a little bit care of your system it shouldnt crash. 7 times in one night Pick? i'd hate to rummage thru your system.

oh and that Mac Optical mouse....the one where the entire mouse is one clicky button......sucks. we had those at school and i was always pressing it without wanting to.

We have them at the campus kiosks here, and I don't like them anymore now than I did when I gave mine away at home. I had the opposite problem, though... It wasn't that I accidently clicked, it was that it was awkward when I did click. Dragging felt especially weird. Just odd, odd things to use. Not a fan.

Better than the oldschool iMac round mice, though.

  8. yeah we had some round ones (which my hand did not fit right at all) a smaller.....real small optical mouse which i dont believe was an apple product. it was like half the size of my hand. it even had two buttons like a pc mouse, and the one we already talked about. i hated all of them.

  9. Yay Pro Tools. I snagged a 12" Powerbook and a Digi 002 awhile ago for a project, and I'm loving it. If all goes well, I'm looking forward to going TDM and G5 in the near future. The fun that will be had.

Heh, I was in Towson a week ago. The movie theatre there is an unholy fusion of parking garage and cinema, just when you think you're going to walk out of the maze like garage, some how, some way, you magically end up in front of the box office. I was dumb founded. Anyway, that whole college area is pretty nice.
