Okay, I've just played the NFS:U demo.
Goodness gracious, the graphics are amazing. The wet ground glistens from your headlights. The car looks sweet. And the city that you race in, well, wait until you see the Chinatown portion. Holy Crap!!
There are two available options in the demo, circuit race and drag race. Circuit race has you racing around the city. You can obviously choose AT or MT before the race begins. There is no customization of the car at all. Gotta wait for the retail version. There was minor traffic during the race, but since it is night racing this is to be expected.
The coolest feature is the nitro boost. They hired someone who worked at Industrial Light and Magic to help them in this area. This was the same person who created the pod race from episode 1. You press and hold the L1 button and the screen around your car becomes blurry as you start gaining speed. Truly wicked effect.
Drag racing is a straightaway rush. There are more traffic obstacles in this mode, so you have to swirve out of the way of passing traffic. You can only use MT in this mode as they want you to focus not just on the racing, but on not burning out your engine.
It's not a long demo, by any means, but from what I've seen, it certainly has alot of promise. Definately one title to watch out for!
Control Setup:
L1 - Nitro
L2 - Shift Down
R1 - E-brake
R2 - Shift Up
Triangle - camera change
circle - horn
square - brake
x - accelerate
dpad and left stick - control/swerve car
right stick - up for accelerate, down for brake

Burnout 2 and Need for Speed 2 Hot Pursuit were the only racing games that I cared about lately, and Underground looks pretty cool, so were are looking forward trying that for sure.
