I take it you've never had a shark swim up to you, then. Once it happens, you will understand that no matter how much you may respect nature, an animal that's bigger and faster than you are and has a mouth full of giant razor-sharp teeth headed straight for you will make you think twice about your conservationist ideals.

That shark wasn't a "scared animal" - it was an animal that was shooting for a free lunch of whale meat. If he hadn't done that, it would have destroyed a good portion of the catch and possibly hurt one of the crew members also. Sharks generally don't attack people, but if there's a lot of food in the water they're liable to make mistakes. When a shark is hungry and you are between it and food, scaring it off doesn't always work.

When I go fishing, I always make sure to tow my catch 20 or 30 feet behind me attached to a float. The main reason for this is that, if a shark decides to take interest in my fish, he'll go for the float instead of me. Some guys don't, and instead tie the fish stringer around their waist. Now and then there are reports of divers found with chunks bitten out of their midsection. None of us want to kill sharks, but we all realize there's a time when we may have to.

For a little background, the sleeper shark is known as a lethargic and docile shark, hardly the efficient preditor that comes to mind when you hear the word shark. Just giving a little perspective.
I'm sure the first thought that ran through his mind when he saw a 700 lbs shark swimming towards his crew was, "I wonder what sort of enormous shark this is. Is it docile and lethargic? And how can I safely scare it off without angering crazy fuck environmentalists the world over?"

It was going to eat his friends. Sounds like a good reason to me.

No no, I meant more about the Polar Bear.
I took all your French Toast.

  5. The polar bear thing is chest beating I'm guessing - my bet is he wont win and we'll hear about his death in the news... but hey - if he's going to die, he's going to die with his boots on!

Anyone remember Legends of the Fall, where brad pitt fights that bear at the end and how it humourously freeze-frames with a narrator saying "It was a good death".

  6. That line is a complete ripoff of The Dark Knight Returns.

Where, Bruce Wayne says "This would be a good death", and Batman eventually says "This will be a good life...good enough."

This article states that people may have been wrong, in their assessment of the sleeper shark.

  8. He's so going to be completely pWNED by a Polar Bear. I'd like to see him drag a Polar Bear backwards, it'd turn around and crush his skull in a millisecond. Those things are like pure muscle, fat and claw.
