"how the hell can you compete with that?" was Perry's exact words and it still holds true today. That was because of Nintendo's licensing fees.

Think that's old-school, back in the past, doesn't happen anymore? When GBA came out, third party games were $40 while all of Nintendo's were $30. Same exact reason.

It is absolutely impossible to compete in a market like that.

Nintendo is definitely tying down third parties, always have and probably always will, they are still doing it today... they think its 1988 still when nobody had a choice, but nowadays third parties are giving them the middle finger because they can code for Xbox or PS2 and make more money than they ever did working with Nintendo.

Nintendo may not outright censor games anymore (actually I think they still do) but they definitely treat third party developers as third-class citizens and have the old "you need us more than we need you" attitude, even though anybody with half a brain could tell you that ain't the case anymore.

I thought being nicer to third parties as far as liscensing fees was part of nintendo's goals this time around, hence the appearence of $19.99 titles.

  4. Nintendo eased up on the GBA stuff once the system got established, but aside from that, they've had a pretty firm grip on third party fees and such.

By "stuff," are you talking about connectivity?

  6. Aarrrrrrgh!

  7. Stuff = licensing fees, with the entire thread being dedicated to the subject, I figured it went without saying.

What $19.99 titles? Nintendo's player's choice titles are all $29.99, $10 higher than xbox and ps2 versions of greatest hits. Not to mention making Capcom, who has done as much for the GC as Nintendo if not more, release old ports of RE2 and 3 for $40 each.

Not to worry, with the way third parties keep dropping GC support, Nintendo won't have many third parties to worry about in the future.

  9. As long as Nintendo keeps making games I want to play then I could couldn't care less what they're image is. Unfortunately, the number of games that interest me coming from Nintendo seems to dwindle year after year year.

  10. Actually, both the Xbox PH and PS2 GH games can be as high as $30. So Nintendo's $30 price point isn't that bad. Plus, Nintendo is continuing their SNES tradition of dropping the titles down $20 from their original price, they did the same thing for the N64 as well.
