Thread: SNK Discussion Madness/ SamShoV/0 Poppy Code

  1. It's not like Groove On wasn't flawed. I was just won over completely by the goofy quirkiness of it all. I expect Matrimelee to be flawed as well but I get the feeling that I won't be able to help but like it. It just has a look, ya know?

I've played it for a few but I pretty much immediately thought to myself "Oh, here we have yet another unnecessary MVS fighting game and the characters, background, premise are completely utterly insignificant, lame and poorly designed. It's like World Heroes for the new millenium."

For some reason just knowing that there's anything related to RotD in Matrimelee is undermining my faith in the overt enjoyability of the direct sequel to Groove On Fight.

Recap, thanks, even though what you just told me I did NOT want to hear.

    Pa
RotD is a Double Dragon game, in essence. It doesn't carry the name, but has a ton of similarities. It's the soul sequel of the Double Dragon fighting game on Neo Geo.

  3. The music in Matrimelee is hilarious. It's a must hear! Hopefully you have Japanese MVS or have the uni-bios on your MVS board to hear it though. Americans got screwed in this respect. The gameplay is a little more generic than Groove on Fight, but it's still a good game in the end.

  4. Well, if MY DOG hadn't just wrecked my truck, I'd probably rush right out and make Matrimelee the first MVS game I shelled over $100 for. All this discussion is making me woozy....... I have an English MVS but I intend to get a Unibios one of these days. Looks like about the same day I get Matrimelee!

Roufuss, about that Double Dragon stuff: I knew that and it's a damn shame. I don't see much similarity and I saw no references whatsoever during my (thankfully) brief session with RotD. One character named Billy that doesn't look very Double Dragony is hardly an appropriate sequel/tribute to the legend. Who made this turd?

Bah, don't bother. I'm too lazy to look it up and it's because I don't even care.

Let's go back to trying to discuss what Playmore can do with SNK's greats to make people like me want to play them again

    Pa

EDIT! I see, so RotD is only a sequel to the DD fighting game? I only played that one a little too. I really hated it. I suppose if that's all it has to live up to, RotD has done a decent enough job.

  5. Mexican company Evoga tried to buy the rights to make a sequel to NG Double Dragon, but Technos Japan said "no, thanks". Evoga then decided to do an unofficial "sequel". ROTD is the result. Billy, Jimmy and Abobo (maybe others) are characters taken directly from the first game.

  6. Hmm... where to start on what SNK should do with their old franchises. Greatly updated and improved remakes to P.O.W. and Samurai Shodown RPG would be a nice start. Sequals to Top Hunter, Crystalis, Cool Cool Toon, Alpha Mission, Super Sidekicks, Baseball Stars and Nam 1975 would be cool. Ask ADK if they can make a new Crossed Swords. Lay off the fighters for a bit and kill KOF simply because they forgot the whole purpose of it. Any other suggestions?

The purpose of KoF, which is all their fighters into one big fighting game, is coming back this year with new teams taking from other SNK games, at least that's what I've been hearing everywhere.

I would kill for a Crystalis sequel, for real.

And Recap got it right... RotD is just a soul sequel to Double Dragon, which in turn was based off of the movie

Wait... Groove On Fight is an MVS title?

Anyhow, Toukon's not bad at all. It captures decently the original Gouketsuji saga style and the music is.. hmm... you need to hear it. Poor backgrounds, thoe.
I'm one of the biggest WH fans around here.

I had a link for the translations to the music in Matrimelee, but it's on my computer back home.

  10. A little late in me getting back to this I know but let's have some fun.

I thought that's what we were talking about. Playing games. And if looking at plastic boxes with fancy inserts is better than just playing the game itself,
I wholeheartly agree but those people that do buy stuff to collect also make up a majority of people who like to buy home versions to play as well.

how about Playmore or whomever making a new piece of proprietary cartridge based arcade hardware (you know, like at least semimodern) and then releasing a home system based on the exact same architecture and then whip up a bunch of the exact same thing that you could purchase for cheap in the arcade format, only with the addition of a plastic box, halfass "manual" and a slickly printed paper insert and continue to keep their "devoted fans' in this battered girlfriend that just can't seem to break free from the mindgames and random beatings type relationship.
Well it's not like the idea doesn't have merit. You have to think about who we're talking about tho. A lot of people are still hooked on the Neo's dated hardware/graphics even now.

Even moreso knowing that the hardware is 13 years old there apparently is enough people out there still loving it enough to where Playmore is making a profit off home cart sales. They wouldn't be too retarded not to make a shitload of carts if they knew they were not going to sell em.

Also to those of you who do buy MVS carts I should add that buying the carts from the 2ndary aftermarket even tho you love Neo*Geo games does not show you supporting Playmore. I've gotten into this arguement before with people buying MVS and Home Carts after they were released years ago and some people still don't get that the only way you're going to be able to show any support is to buy the games new on release.

That's where the real support comes from. Hell I wouldn't be surprised that half of the high cost is due to HK Bootleggers dumping teh romz on the net so nobody will have to pay for em. That among other things more or less.

The cost of one Jaleco Pony Cabinet with a single slot MVS board is almost exactly the same as a fully modded AES system and it comes with a 29" RGB monitor and real arcade controls to boot. And oh yes, you can also use it to play all the rest of your favorite high quality jamma arcade PCBs. Show me an AES that'll do that and I'll be a convert for life
I got lucky ages ago with a 2nd AES system. Bought a home cart system with 13 carts for $300.00 flat out. of course you have to remember some people don't have the room to lug around a Supergun or even have an arcade cab in their home to play with.

The thing with KoF 2002 is that it neither looks nor plays better than KoF 98 and it looks a damn sight WORSE than MotW. And I'll freely admit to spouting preconcieved notions directly out my ass regarding SS5, I just don't particularly care for that series. Last Blade pisses all over the poor things, to say nothing of Last Blade 2.
Last Blade is a visual treat to me as well and seeing as now Last Blade 3 is due out soon I hope that it will carry on the tradition of play style i so enjoyed out of the 1st two games. I think Last Blade one was a tad better than two imho but that's more or less me feeling that the control issue is more percise.

Is there really a Rage of the Dragons sequel?

    Pa
Yes and No. Storywise it's not but extra character wise it is.

Even tho the MVS version is probably cheaper I do like the fact Shawn was able to convice Playmore to put the fucking Meg counts back on the home versions.
