Damn.At least 17 deaths were blamed on the fires, 15 in Southern California and two in Mexico, as separate blazes were scattered along an arc from the suburbs northwest of Los Angeles to Ensenada, Mexico, about 60 miles south of the border. At least 1,552 homes had been destroyed in California....
More than 521,929 acres of brush, forest and homes - or about 815 square miles, roughly three-quarters the total area of Rhode Island - had burned in California.....
More than 10,000 firefighters were battling the flames, which by Tuesday had already cost the state more than $24 million. More resources were on the way from Arizona and Nevada, which each volunteered the use of 50 fire trucks, and Nevada also was sending three helicopters....
Some of the California fires were believed started by arsonists. Investigators sought two men who were seen throwing flaming objects from a van in the area of the Old Fire....
Also heard on the news that one of the blazes was started by a hunter who tried to light a signal fire to get the attention of one of his buddies.
The air's 10x worse than the horrible smog of the 80s. Hopefully the cooler weather and possible rain this weekend will help with containment.
Props to the firefighters.

On Saturday I actually had to drive out my aunt and cousin to LAX to fly back home to the Philippines. On the way back we stopped to spend the night at my uncle's pad in Chino Hills and intended to go home the next day.
On the way there we saw smoke and fires just a few miles off of I-15 nearing LA, should've seen that as a bad sign. On Sunday they closed down I-15 and there was an alternate route everyone had to take to Las Vegas that added another 4-5 hours to the trip, and the highways going there were predictably PACKED!
So I stayed another day out there, ended up missing my Biology class and a day late for a credit card payment which I now have to call in and make sure doesn't hurt me
Hope everyone living out there will be ok. Man, wild fires, earthquakes, power failures...now I understand why so many Californians wanna come out to Vegas, heh![]()

Rhydant - It looks like that up here in Woodland Hills, too. Scary stuff. I move away from CT to escape the snow and now my car is covered in white ash! Absolutely nuts!

THe fire over here is now moving east towards Palomar Mountain. the air was fairly clear today and cool. but we still have the worst air quailty within a 100-mile radius. all the schools and colleges have been closed until at least monday.
