Thread: This generation's sequels to classic series

  1. Shinobi - The old games are very good and very solid, but were never personal favourites. The PS2 incarnation, on the other hand, is the best game of the post-DC generation in my mind.

    Maximo - I always liked the old GnG but found them frustrating. Maximo took some getting used to but it's turned out to be one of my favourites. Like Shinobi, it has great old school sensibilities in a modern game.

    Sonic Adventure 1/2 - I love the old games and I love these new ones. They've both very different but I love and enjoy them all. Almost every Sonic game (2D or 3D) innovates and adds enough to the mix to keep it fresh and fun.

    Sonic Advance 1/2 - The first GBA game was solid but unspectacular, it's sequel on the other hand, yowzer - it is spectacular. It's one of the best Sonic games ever and one of the most innovative. There is brilliance here.

    MegaMan Zero - I am not sure if this should count, but I loved MMZ and I was never much of a fan of the original series. I always liked the idea of MM but found the games lacking in several areas and could never get into them. I have not played the MMX series much.. so that may account for why I like MMZ. Regardless, MMZ is great.

    MegaMan Battle Network - I liked the first one, it had some very cool hybrid gameplay, but was far from perfect. I didn't like it enough to buy 3 sequels and they have got to be kidding with how fast they're coming out.

  2. Movement was a joke compared to what most FPS use on console, they have a second stick and options should have been customized to however we can set it at rather then what some developer's puny little brain thinks.
    How was it a joke? For the possibly the first time ever a company actually designed an FPS with the controller in mind instead of trying to copy a scheme that was never intended to work on such a thing. Also, a second stick would've been useless, but we've already gone over that before.
    Regardless, MMZ is great.

  4. I'll just comment on some of the more important ones...

    Zelda WW - I felt this game really pooed all over the N64 Zeldas. Best one since Link to the Past, and the second best of the series. I greatly, greatly enjoyed Ocarina, but this one felt fresh in many ways, and the mechanics were much more polished. Some tedium in the middle/end of the game is the only fault I can level against it. Otherwise, fantastic rendition.

    Castlevania - Following Aria of Sorrow, this game comes across as a disappointment. It's got a lot of good things going for it (the bosses, the action/control, the music/graphics), but in the end it's just brought down by it's castle design, and the uselessness of combat for large chunks of the game. A solid start for the series if it's moving into 3D though.

    Super Mario Sunshine - I had a blast with this. It didn't innovate as much as I would have liked. But in the end I was pretty damn satisfied, I wish we got Mario games more often, even if they aren't Mario 64 caliber games that blow you away (SMW is my favorite from this series still).

    Planet Harriers - Goddamnit I want to play this game.

    Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - I agree with what NeoZ said... the demo was pretty amazing, but I can't judge it just from that. But after Prince of Persia 3D, we can already say it's a far, far better game. So nice work Ubisoft.

    Sonic Adventure - I greatly enjoyed both of these games... I think I even enjoyed SA2 more than SA1, but it's not all that important. I had a blast with both of them. They have a bunch of nagging little problems, but I think I enjoy playing these as much as playing the original Genesis titles. Odd, I know.

    Metroid Fusion - This was good, but it really was too linear and confined in my mind to bear the Metroid name. Still haven't tried fighting the last boss, so it didn't grip me like Prime or (especially) Super ever did.

    Metroid Prime - Awesome. I frequently try to decide if I liked this or Wind Waker more... I have trouble sitting down and playing this again so soon after finishing it though, so I usually say Wind Waker was the more impressive follow-up.

    Phantasy Star Online - This game has sucked my soul dry so many times... I've probably logged over 300 hours on this across three different platforms... I love it. But I still want a damn single player Phantasy Star! And so does everyone else! C'mon Sega!

  5. Shinobi - Not a bad game not amazing but not bad either, I loathed the bottom less pits though

    Wario World - Great Game. Short and Sweet. One of the few tressure games i like.

    Zelda WW - Amazing game, both visually and gameplay wise. Personally I like it just slightly more than OOT.

    Castlevania - The GBA Games have been fucking amazing, specially Aria of Sorrow. LoI is pretty good, a little dissapointing for a 3D castlevania.

    TMNT - Very dissapointing, no wheres near as good as the older games

    Super Mario Sunshine - I Liked it, not as good as 64 but still a good game. I thought for the audience it was meant to hit it was a bit harder than it should have been.

    Sonic Adventure - 1 and 2 weren't too bad, not amazing but not bad, personally I prefer the original Sonics to the 3d ones.

    Metroid Fusion - Great game, could have been better if the Computer didnt hold your hand every step of the way.

    Metroid Prime - My Favorite game ever. Fucking amazing, plain and simple, they did metroid in 3d PERFECTLY I can not wait for the sequel.

    Rygar - I liked this game alot. It was a bit short but I had alot of fun with it. Heres hoping they make a sequel.


    Maximo - This is still the best game on the PS2 IMHO. A very worthy sorta sequel to GnG.

  6. No one mentioned the most anticipated sequel of this generation: MGS2. I think its a great game, but MGS is still better.

    Metroid Prime is probably my favorite sequel so far this generation.

    I've been play a lot of Contra: SS lately, and I think they did a good job with it. one of the best PS2 games i've played.

  8. Wario Ware - it's not a sequel to anything. fun for 3 hours.

    Castlevania - aria of sorrow is almost as good as sotn, which makes it really really good.

    Sonic Adventure - completely worthless.

    Metroid Fusion - too easy, led you by the hand, but still a really fun game.

  9. I agree with voltz and NeoZeedeater about the Metroid control, but I've already went down that road defending that old war horse , so I'll leave that one alone. But the controls that were there were adequate enough and didn't hinder how the developers wanted you to play, so I'll give them props for that.

    Back On-topic, the games that I've played so far:

    Zelda WW - I've only played the demo, so no comment here.

    Megaman - Never a big fan, but played MMZ and it was fun (yet difficult in only the "Capcom refuses to give us better control" way)

    Castlevania - Loved SOTN, HOD and AOS. Haven't played the new one yet.

    TMNT - Only played the PC demo, that while was fun in itself I'm not sure how it'll transfer into a full game. And WTF is wrong with Konami and not giving us 4-player mode?!?!? Hell, that's what we always wanted in the old versions, and now that we've got the power and controller ports, you STILL don't give it to us?!?!?

    Super Mario Sunshine - Again, only played the demo, but that's all I needed.

    Sonic Adventure - SA1 is still a great game, and except for Big the Cat there's no complaints. SA2 eclipses it though. I never experienced any of the glitches that other people have complained about, and even enjoyed Knuckles levels (99% of the time ). I'm not sure if I liked them better than the Genny versions, though.

    Metroid Fusion - I had no problem with the linear gameplay, as I like that style of play as well. Making a more cohesive storyline was cool.
    Yeah, it's probably the worst Metroid of them all, but that doesn't diminish that the game still rocks.

    Metroid Prime - Best Remake so far this generation. Hell, I'd say the Best Nintendo game this generation. Hell, I'd even raise you one more and say it's Nintendo's best game in quite some time. Even their best 3D game, like, ever.

    Panzer Dragoon Orta - Love it, love it, love it. Awesome game with still stunning graphics, sound and gameplay. In my eyes, second only to Prime on the remake front.

    Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Looks awesome. I'm really rooting for it, as the demo was very good. I just wish it gave you the opportunity to just delve right into a level instead of chopping up the levels by objective/gameplay tutorial style.

    Metal Gear Solid 2 - Greatly improved gameplay, but by the time we got to the seventh betrayal, the storyline was starting to piss me off. Not bad, but waaaay too complicated and convoluted for its own good. Oh, and Raiden is a wussy. And I wanted to absolutely kill his girlfriend by the end of the game.

    "Jack, why don't you talk about yourself to me? I feel like you don't love me!"

    "BITCH! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A F'IN LIFE OR DEATH MISSION HERE?!? CAN'T THIS WAIT TILL I GET HOME?!?!?"

    Phantasy Star Online - I love this game. I've already devoted around 200 hours to the DC and GC versions combined, and am about to embark on the X-Box version soon. God help my social life. So what if it's far removed gameplay-wise from the main games, or if it's a Diablo clone.At the end of the day, it still as addicting as all hell.

    There are probably more, but I think I've done enough.

I think the moment in MGS2 that really got to me was when I was in the middle of an actual firefight with some enemy soldiers and we were blasting away at each other, me trying to find some cover and fight them off while they tried to flank me... and then Rose called me in the middle of it all and began bitching about how Jack doesn't pay enough attention to her. My suspension of disbelief stops when it requires bullets to actually halt in mid-air for my character to take a phone call that honestly has nothing in the fucking slightest to do with the game.

    Actually, that's not entirely true. I stopped taking it seriously during "I live on through this arm!"
