Thread: This generation's sequels to classic series

  1. Let's see:

    Wario Ware - Very good.

Zelda WW - Wind Waker has stunning graphics, however the game is literally Ocarina of Time with better graphics. The game feels old-school-straight-from-1987 from start to finish. It's sad when a game poses no challenge because you've already seen, and solved, the puzzles in five or six other games. Very weak.

Megaman - Fuck Mega Man. This shit needs to die. I don't care what anyone says, Mega Man is a fucking shitty-ass character, Zero is worse, his dog needs to be stepped on, and every 2D game is exactly the same as the last. All the Mega Man games are the fucking same. All the Mega Man X games are the fucking same. Now, Capcom is churning out Mega Man Battle Network and all that trash is the same too. If you don't see that and you keep buying them endlessly you are a dumb piece of shit. I don't care if you think this is flamebait, IF YOU ARE STILL BUYING MEGA MAN GAMES YOU ARE A RETARD.

Street Fighter III - Great game.

Castlevania - The GBA Castlevania games are bullshit. The first game was okay but the other 2 were lazy and just churned out. Fuck these games. Give me a damn PS2 version.

Super Mario Sunshine - Worst Mario game yet.

Advance Wars - This is a great game but it's not all that much different from the old ones.

Sonic Adventure - Sonic Adventure WAS FUCKING AWESOME. Great game. Loved it. Five stars, whatever. I don't care what anyone says. Sonic Adventure 2, however, sucked a lot of shit.

Metroid Prime - Good game but it can't touch Super Metroid. Hell, there are only maybe 2 or 3 games on the planet that can touch Super Metroid so that's not really a diss against Prime. Super Metroid is simply videogame perfection in every single way.

Phantasy Star Online - CRAP. The first game was okay but it was clearly a watered-down Diablo. It came out when, in 2000? I was playing a better and more complex game in 1997. But they have churned out the same shit endlessly and the fact that they still store the characters on your memory card, WHILE CHARGING YOU A MONTHLY FEE, is deplorable.

    Maximo - Great game.

  2. Shinobi - Very meh. Then of course mzo calls me crazy for getting Otogi for free and trying to sell it at my first chance.

Wario World - Wow, whats horse shit!?

Wario Ware - Wow, whats one of the best games I've played in years!?

Zelda WW - Nice game, very boring. Maybe if they Star Fox Adventures and the Zelda bonus disc were never released I would have been able to stay awake during it.

Megaman - I guess. Megaman Network rules (Best. Design. Ever.) and so does the Legends series. Too bad the Network series moved way too fast for me to give it more than one shot and the Legends series seems stuck forever. The X series took a major nose dive after 4 (Or was it 5..all the PSOne games start to blur together) and original Megaman seemingly dosen't exist.

Street Fighter III - I love this game. Nuff said.

Castlevania - Three Castlevania's in three years makes me cry like Megaman Network. Way to milk a good thing to the point where I don't give a damn about anything Castlevania. Lament Of Innocence is fun though.

Super Mario Sunshine - I loved it. Sure, it got pretty tedious halfway through but for as far as I played it was an awesome game.

    Planet Harriers - Snore.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Still haven't played the demo even though I see it everyday.

    Advance Wars - FunFunFun.

Sonic Adventure - Haha! Wow! These games were straight up monkey trash!

Metroid Fusion - I blazed through it in one sitting..pretty good game still.

Metroid Prime - Whenever I feel the need to own another Gamecube game, I'll buy this when I see it for less then 20 bucks. I loved the game, but....yeah.

Phantasy Star Online - HAHA! Oh man...don't get me started. Man is this series awful.

    Well there we go
    Play Guitar Hero //

  3. Shinobi - Terrific game, very worthy sequel. I ought to buy it sometime.

Wario World - Played it briefly. Seemed somewhat enjoyable.

Wario Ware - Totally came out of left-field and took just about everyone by surprise. Along with Warioland IV, it seems that some of Nintendo's best games lately have been starring Wario.

Zelda WW - I absolutely loved the visual style of the game, but the fact that was almost as easy as Zelda 3 left something to be desired. Fun game, but almost no challenge whatsoever.

Megaman - Whatever. I tried X7 briefly and found it kinda dull. I enjoyed the MM Zero games a bit more. Never played either the GBA or GC Battle Network games, so I can't comment. My enthusiasm for this series was extinguished years ago.

Street Fighter III - Third Strike is still my favorite fighting game. That's all I have to say.

Castlevania - I rented Lament of Innocence a few days ago and I can't seem to maintain any interest in playing it. The castle design is rather bland, as is the combat and gameplay itself. The game isn't terrible, but I'm not very impressed either. The GBA Castlevania titles have been enjoyable, if highly similar experiences.

Super Mario Sunshine - I liked it. Certainly not the greatest Mario game, and there were obvious areas where the game needed improvement, but I had my fun with it.

    Advance Wars - Addicting.

Sonic Adventure - I really dug both Sonic Adventure titles back on the Dreamcast, though my excitement over Sonic Heroes is somewhat muted. I'm not sure why.

Metroid Fusion - I wanted to appreciate the game for the combat and feel of the gameplay alone, but Nintendo really raped the whole exploration element out of this Metroid game. It played like a Metroid game but it certainly didn't flow like one.

Metroid Prime - I was wrong in my doubts about this game prior to it's release. I had fully expected to hate nearly everything about this game, but wound up becomming realy engrossed. No Super Metroid, but very much worthy of the Metroid name. Kudos.

Phantasy Star Online - Played it for about two months during the Dreamcast days, and will likely never play it again. I want Phantasy Star V, thanks.

Contra: Shattered Soldier - Konami really turned this series around from the joke it had become during the 32-bit days. Tough, but compelling enough to keep me playing. Very good.

  4. Shinobi - I'm having a lot of fun progressively beating it over 10 years.

Wario World - I played it for all of 10 minutes...I have no idea.

Wario Ware - genius. One of the best games of the generation. Original, fun, fast.

Zelda WW - So very pretty, so well done, but I just couldn't give it the time it deserves...it was so repetitive.

Megaman - Battle Network? Very mediocre. X7 was also really mediocre....the series seems to be going pretty downhill.

Street Fighter III - good stuff, but I like Alpha 3 the bestest.

Castlevania - Circle, Aria, Harmony are all really good games. The music, characters, gameplay....just about everything about them is right on track. Lament is shaping up nicely....but not quite as nice as the 2D ones I'm used to. I wish they wouldve adopted a Contra:SS 2D look, but so did everyone else. I think overall the GBA games are better than the PS2 one, but the PS2 one is still a blast.

Super Mario Sunshine - Even though I feel awful about never finishing it, I thought it was really a good game. Its fun, it's easy...but not too easy, it's not full of annoying crap, and spraying paint away is really addicting.

    Planet Harriers - ???

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Not fast enough. Pretty, but not fast enough.

Advance Wars - I love it!!! It's sooooo addicting....almost as bad as Wario Ware. I'm awful at the strategy stuff, but I want to keep playing it.

Sonic Adventure - eh....well......they were fun. Not much too them, I don't think I'd pay full price for one, but they're cute and amusing for a few hours.

Metroid Fusion - Liked it muchly. A little bit repetitive at times, but I'm impatient as all hell. It really impressed me how much they did with the GBA though.....THE VOICE, ITS TALKING TO ME!

Metroid Prime - The best of the bunch until Ninja Gaiden comes along. I can't say enough good things about this game.

Phantasy Star Online - It was fun for a little while, until it was not fun anymore. That is the most generic statement ever, but it's the only way I can describe it. I really wish they'd just ditch the whole stupid PSO thing and make an actual sequel.

  5. Shinobi - fuck this game.

Wario World - it was good game, i enjoyed what i played. don't think it was as good as most made it out to be though. probably just the big time Treasure bias that some people here have.

Wario Ware - sequal to what? regardless, this game is something special no doubt.

Zelda WW - it's a good game, great presentation. love the style. nowhere near as good as Ocarina though. i think having the game take place in the sea made all the difference though. im always up for seeing EAD do new things with their franchises, but i would've much rather have just had the games over world be on land. i think everyone will agree that this game would've been much better if it took place on land. really, i think the only thing that made this one not as good as others in the series (not including Majora), was really just the setting of the game.

Megaman - haven't played any of the GBA games, but i played the a bit of the import GameCube game, and thought it was the worse MegaMan thing i had ever seen.

Street Fighter III - Third Strike is the best fighting game ever made.

Castlevania - liked what i've played on GBA, haven't touched PS2 version since E3.

Super Mario Sunshine - Not a bad game but the design doesn't compare to previous Marios. It's a shame, especially since it looks, sounds and controls beautifully.
pretty much how i feel about it. i'll just add that once again, the games setting is what i think really stopped it from being up there with the rest of the series. once again, taking place in the Mushroom would've made all the difference.

Advance Wars - my favorite stratedgy game. although the only other thing i've played in the genre is War Craft 2 (liked that a lot though).

Sonic Adventure - the first one was really awesome at first. well, the Sonic levels atleast. i dunno, everything about the game sucks ass except for the Sonic levels. they really should just make a Sonic only game. if they did, im sure i'd give it atleast an 8/10.

Metroid Fusion - i dunno, i love IntSys and all, but this game just felt like a chore to me. bosses are pretty lame too. story is pretty cool though.

Metroid Prime - my only complaint with this game is that the style just doesn't compare at all to previous games in the series. well, overall, the game did have some nice areas as far as style goes. but aside from that, major props to Retro for managing to pull off the games designs in 3D. i remember back before GameCube launch, and well, before E3 2002, i must of asked myself "how the hell do you pull off Metroid in 3D?" a few million times. i seriously just couldn't come up with anything. first person worked out just fine though.

Phantasy Star Online - oh yeah, not including Rez, best game on the Dreamcast. Episode II was everything i could want out of a sequal. well, i mean, there are things that i wanted them to do. like, take advantage of the C-Stick for the camera, Z for the button layout switch, causing L and R to be used for something new. i also wanted the Battle system to be a bit more action packed. i think Z-Targeting would've made a fine addition.
but anyways, yeah, awesome games. Episode I took over my life on Dreamcast, and so did Episode II on GameCube.

Wave Race: Blue Storm - man, where to start with this one? easily the most under rated game this generation. this really took the series into a whole new level. the game is insanely deep, literally flawless controls. this game did everything right. Ridge Racer V, F-Zero GX, Gran Turismo 3. all fantastic racing games, but none as rewarding as Blue Storm.

Grand Theft Auto 3 / Vice City - ah c'mon, we all know what made this a good sequal.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - completely different type of fighting game, so i don't bother comparing it to the rest, but i just want to point out that i really don't think people understand how deep this game really is.

Metal Gear Solid 2 - as far as gameplay goes, it really did take the series to a new level. sure the story got shitty at the end, but it was still a great experience.

Klonoa 2 - so it's not as good as Door To Phantomile, but hey, the gameplay and level design was still rock solid, and the presentation and style was as good as i could hope for from a Klonoa sequal. now please Namco, just make one for GameCube and show us what you guys can really do with the series on a next gen platform.

Project Justice - they really nailed it here. if you liked Rival Schools, you won't have any complaints.

Tony Hawk 3 - once again, took advantage of what next gen systems could do, and took the series to a whole other level. still the best in the series if you ask me. ok so sure, 4 has better gameplay, but it's still somewhat stale.

i think that's all i'll do for now.

You obviously have never played Aria of Sorrow. There is nothing about that game that could be described as lazy and/or churned out. Harmony of Dissonance could fall into that category I suppose.

Go get your PS2 version at EB, and try telling somone with a straight face it's better than the "bullshit" GBA Castlevanias...

  7. Yes I have. Aria of Sorrow is crap. All of them are crap, really, especially compared to SOTN. And when I said "PS2 Version", I was referring to a 2D one, so go screw.

    Ill also add:

WipeOut - This game was hit and miss... I loved it, I thought the track design was awesome and the game had real depth with lots of unlockables and game modes, and the old ones didn't have that. However the graphic style was take-it-or-leave-it (I liked it, but #3's was better and I wish they kept it along those lines) and the ship design was flat out ugly. Still the core gameplay was fucking awesome and I loved the emphasis on combat... dammit nothing is better than starting a race with 30 ships (or whatever) and ending with 8 because everyone beat the fuck out of each other. And the music was as great as you'd expect from this series.

Fusion was not the amazing blow-em-all-away racer I know everyone was hoping for, but it was close enough to keep me wishing. I pine endlessly for yet another version. Bring on WipeOut 5! Come on Sony! DOOOO IT!!!!

Ahh yes, because "PS2 version" should be inferred as "2D version" since the PS2 is synonymous with quality 2D gaming. Silly me!

And no, to repeat, Aria of Sorrow is not crap. Your taste in games baffles me sometimes.

  9. To be honest while I was typing that I forgot about Lament of Innocence, which should tell you quite plainly what I think about that game... I have not played it nor do I care to.

  10. If you hated Aria of Sorrow, you would despise Lament of Innocence to the point where you'd rather be dead. The "bullshit" GBA games are far, far superior (and Aria comes close to SotN's greatness).
