Thread: Full details on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set

  1. Yeah, Hicks would have probably died unarmed anyway unless he's like McGyver or something.

The coolest moment in Ressurection was when the dude with the glasses put his chest on some dude's head and the alien burst through it.

  2. I'll admit that Dutton taking on the Alien with his bare hands is bad-ass, and I already talked about Fincher's beautiful job directing the movie. It's just that after the intense second movie, 3 just seemed a tad...anti-climatic. I mean, back to one Alien, no real weapons, etc. It was done.

Oh, and it was a doggie Alien. Big whoop.

    Aliens > Alien > Alien 4 > Alien 3

As for Dutton, I loved that HBO series he did, The Corner.

  3. Me:

    Alien>Alien3>Aliens>Resurrection

Alien3 is my personal favorite of the series, but I think that Alien is a superior piece of cinema.

I'm probably one of the few people who didn't care for Aliens all that much. It was an action film first, a sci-fi film second, a drama third, and a horror film last. I am a fan of mood and horror before I am a fan of action/sci-fi, and I think Alien and Alien3 have it all over Aliens when it comes to mood and horror. Aliens took away the intense identity of the creature and threw a swarm of them on the screen, which I think made the Alien less than what it should be. In the first film, the Alien was a striking character, and one reason why was the simple lack of information - you had no idea what it was going to do next. In Aliens, the creatures appeared....and got shot/burned. They lost the haunting, almost majestic aura that was so carefully created in Alien. I also did not care for the insect-ish additions to the mythos, and I thought the idea of the Queen Alien was pretty lame (although she looked bad-ass). I hated Newt - her character (and Carrie Henn's horrid acting) almost singlehandedly ruined the film for me. I also am not a fan of James Cameron's directing or writing style - I think his best film is The Terminator. I think he's technically amazing, but lacks an artistic touch - I find his work to be really flat and impersonal, even Titanic. So take all this with a grain of salt.....Aliens is a good and even great film, but I thought failed as a sequel to Alien.

I look at Alien3 as sort of a remake of Alien. It has better direction than Aliens (David Fincher is a genius, and my favorite director), better characters, and a more intense plot (Ripley being impregnated). Charles Dance and Charles S. Dutton nailed their parts, and I actually think Sigourney did a better job here than in Aliens. The supporting cast was all fantastic, which is more than I could say for the Marines of Aliens. I thought the dog alien was a damn cool idea (I always wondered what would happen if Jones got impregnated), although the CG was pretty poor. The film is full of subtle imagery and suggestion, much like Alien is.

David Fincher was so pissed at Fox for hacking Alien3, he swore to never work without complete control again - also probably why he didn't contribute commentary for the new box set. This is why I cannot freaking wait to see his original version, because I am positive his original vision is superior to what was released in the theaters.

I'm with Icepick - I wouldn't ever watch Resurrection if it wasn't for Winona. That film should not have been made....it's really awful. I am interested in the extra sequences though, as well as Joss Whedon's original script (which Fox proceeded to hack up too).

  4. I remember the original newborn was supposed to be something spiderlike and had some really nasty abilities including cat-like reflexes. The original script has this thing hanging on the side of the ship as they went down to earth (surviving burning into the atmosphere) and ended up being ground up in some farming machine. I didn't see the point in Fox having to cut down the time or the budget, but they forced them to finish up the project and sadly we've seen the result.

Hmm. A Fincher DVD commentary probably would have been great if he was allowed to say any damn thing he wanted about the studio.

At the time, though, he had just come off of directing music videos, so he didn't have much pull with the studio as far as doing what he wanted.
