Widescreen DVD/Fullscreen VHS question

I'm just curious- why when DVD was introduced did widescreen suddenly become the format of choice? Is there something about the DVD that's more effective for displaying movies in the widescreen format? I'm just curious, I've seen widescreen VHS tapes here and there but for the most part they're all fullscreen. Then DVD came out and now widescreen's the common format.

my guess is that when DVDs first started coming out alot of them came with both Widescreen and Full Screen on one disc
im guessing for alot of people it was the first time they saw Widescreen on their home tv and id guess that could have ignited the desire for it

Well usually before widescreen VHS was reserved for mainly film nuts, so they costed a little more since the audience was so small. That's why some avoided it. When DVD came out they had both formats at the same price so people didn't really mind anymore I guess. Widescreen is better in my opinion. IG-88 got cut out of Empire thanks to fullscreen.

I would add that the DVD was the first mass media format capable of supporting anamorphic widescreen. Also, in the early stages when the players were expensive, they were *clearly* aiming at the Laser Disc fan-based market for early adopters and those film enthusiasts primarily sought widescreen discs which preserved the original format of the film.

This thread reminded me of those idiots that prefer Full Screen because it gets rid of the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I hate those people. There is no contest, Widescreen O W N S.
