First half done everything just right, with him being a school nerd, his insecurities, than amazing discovery and how he learn how to use his powers. It was done great, fx were excellent, and characters were played quite well.
Out of all the responses...I've decided to reply to yours because it encapsulates much of what was already mentioned.

I can relate to your feelings regarding the A.S and B.S (respectively After Spidey, Before Spidey period). Based on what I've read (and that scrutiny from movie critic Ebert...it would seem a lot of ppl would consider the live action film to actually be BS!)

I found that the movie adaption was a solid representation of what was developed by the comic legacy. A few elements which were altered and possibly the biggest quip of them all lies in the method in which Spidey would shoot his webs; as well as the manner in which Uncle Ben etc.

Not really enough to have issues with UNLESS you're incredibly jaded, died...Parker's education level during prior to his transformation, expect perfection, or as in the highest sense of the word - you're a purist and the movie MUST be perfectly reflective of the comic book history.

But then movie switched into Big City, and first few scenes of Spidey fighting crime was great, but then enter the Power Rangers Goblin, Harry the Whiny Friend, Boring and over long various scenes and the movie temp was broken. Spiderman swinging fx were awesome, but most of everything else felt unnatural.
Heh. The Big City scenes were great...had that same energy as when Batman had his action scenes. JJ was superb...the actor had his mannerisms dead on. The drama unfolding with Norman Osborne as the Green Goblin was also top notch, excellent performance by William Dafoe. As for those, sullen moments...Pete and Mae looking stoic at times *shrugs* Not touching that...it is just one aspect that I see had to be addressed. It's not as if future Spidey films will have that boo hoo, boring segements as filler for transitional scenes. I expect the sequel to be much more action packed.

What exactly felt unnatural to you, if it wasn't regarding the swing FX?

And the ending was....., I was laughing pretty much all the last 10 or so minutes. Too bad, I really was looking forward this film.

And they couldnt end the film at the less patriotic note, than with Spiderman next to US flag?
Heh...laughing?

    ************* SPOILER *************

That he got his ass handed to him by GG? I guess that is cause for some humor, but as typical hero stories go...Spidey got in his licks and then peaced out the Goblin for good (at least, the original architect). Now Harry's forever mad at Spidey and you know what that means.

As for the whole flag dealie... 9/11 is all I have to say about it. Didn't bother me one bit. I found it to be a nice touch. Would it have been cooler if he had done the same pose sequence on say The Empire State Bldg?

(Going to see it again later today btw!)

Mortal Kombat wipes its buttocks with the Resident Evil movie. RE ain't bad, but MK totally blows it out of the water as far as video game movies go. It perfectly captured the spirit of the first and second games through its settings and characters. If only the same could be said for Annihilation.

    ***SPOILERS***

I was also thinking, do you think it's possible they'll go with Green Goblin again for the next movie, following the whole plot with Harry Osborne avenging his father and what not? I personally think it will arise in maybe the third movie, and the second one will consist of a different villian (probably Doc Oc or Shocker, but I'm crossing my fingers that the whole Sinister Six will make an appearance) and have a whole subplot of Harry Osborne gradually discovering things about his father piece by piece.

    ***END SPOILER***

I agree....I dunno if it was because most of the kids and I in the movie theater were young but there was so much buzz while we were watching it. We were so pumped up every time an MK character made their first appearance. We even yelled out their names when they appeared.

  4. I have to disagree with the notion that the MK film was better than Resident Evil. I've seen Mortal Kombat recently and the whole thing is worse than I remember. As a matter of fact, the plot was just a ripoff of Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee and John Saxon replaced by Liu Kang and Johnny Cage respectively, with Goro and Shang Tsung standing in for Bolo and Han.

Hee hee, the crowd went wild when Reptile turned into his ninja form and the announcer said "Reptile!", not to mention the time when Scorpion shouted "COME HERE!".

And I totaly marked out for Johnny Cage's autograph friendship.

    That was the whole point.

  6. The only two pieces of pop fiction I take seriously are Star Trek: TNG and Spider-Man, so I went into this film hoping for more than just visceral thrills. I wanted to see the character I have loved and admired since I was a wee lad done justice on the big screen. Surprisingly, this movie came closer than I dreamed any movie would, and I am excited about the future of this series.

    PROS:

Spidey is a bad-ass gymnastic wonder. I think a lot of people who have only a passing knowledge of the character fail to realize how impressive his abilities truly are. This movie shows off his powers quite effectively.

The origin story was included. I believe the original plans for the movie had it starting after Peter Parker had already become Spider-Man. To me, maybe the most important characteristic of Spidey is his sense of justice and personal responsibility. I would have hated to see Uncle Ben's influence glossed over.

Overall, the movie stayed shockingly true to the comics. This is a good, good, GOOD thing. Finally, Hollywood is learning that these stories have been successful for thirty-plus years for a reason. The portrayal of J. Jonah is probably the symbol of comic-book faithfulness - was that performance creepy or what?

    CONS:

Spider-man produced the webs from his body. I though spiders shot webs out of their mouths (that would bring new meaning to the nickname Web-head), but someone else said they shoot webs out of their rear ends. In any case, I would have rather had web shooters that Parker made on his own. (This was NOT a major sticking-point with me, however.)

    *******SPOILER*******

Parker's girlfriend didn't die. I know that may sound funny to some of you, but the ending was too feel-good for me and did not fit the character. I would have kept the cemetery scene the same, except Peter would be mourning the loss of Gwen Stacy and taking comfort in the arms of MJ. The just-friends speech was great, no matter if Roger Ebert understood it or not. The only problem that Peter would probably want to hang up the tights at that point, but that could have been left open. Aren't American audiences ready for more realistic endings to their movies?

    *******SPOILER END*******

Peter Parker seemed a little shallow. Sure, it was hinted that he could discuss nanotechnology with Norman Osborn, and he worked in a lab after school, but Peter seemed neither smart enough nor deep enough for my tastes. Remember, he is a genius with deep moral convictions, not just a creepy arachnid-dude.

It looks like Venom's origin will be majorly screwed with. Remember that line at the beginning about some spiders blending in with their environments? Add that to the fact that there are eleven more enhanced spiders, and you have the makings of a watered-down Venom story. The way it was scripted in the comics was original and fascinating. Let's hope the movie won't cop out and just have Eddie Brock try to expose Spidey and stumble on his secret, being bitten by a spider in the process. Take away the alien symbiote, and Venom is hardly better than Hulk's nemesis, the Abomination. In fact, Abomination's origin was just like that. (Ugh.)

Anyway, see the movie. It is spectacular and refreshing if you are a fan of the comic, entertaining if you are not.

  7. Spoiler

I was thinking about why Peter rejects MJ at the end. At first I didn't get it, but then I realized he doesn't want her to be with him becuase everyone close to him would be in danger. Right before he rejects her, he is looking at Ben's grave and saying pretty much that. MJ can't understand it either, but it seemed she looked at him as he was walking away, and a look of understanding crossed her face. This could mean she knows he is Spiderman, and why he has to reject her. This might also mean in the sequal, he will have to show her he is Spiderman, so they can be together.

Well i doubt that they want to make a movie starring cosmic spidey and that whole outerspace deal that i hardly remember. It worked in comics but i think it's far to cheesy for the big screen, so i don't see anything wrong with changing Venom's origin. As long as the human aspects of Eddie Brock and his motivations and hatred for Parker come through i think it will be good. They should just ignore the origin stories and focus on making good adventure/action style plot, they don't need to establish characters that have been around for decades already.

  9. WOOO!!! Awesome flick! I love how you see the transformation of Norman Osborn into the Goblin (And for those of you who feel he looks like a power rangers villain or something, get over it. Just how lame do you think he would have looked with the rubber mask????? Seriously, get a fucking life.)

Anyway, somebody must REALLY like this flick, as it made 100 million in it's FIRST weekend! Awesomeness comes in Red tights!

They'll probably do what the cartoon did, and have the symbyote (sp?) come out of a space rock.

    Ugh.
