Conan O'Brien to Succeed Leno on NBC's `Tonight Show' (Update3)

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Comedian Conan O'Brien has been picked to succeed Jay Leno as host of NBC's ``Tonight Show'' when Leno's contract expires in 2009, the television network owned by General Electric Co. said.

O'Brien, 41, has signed a contract under which he'll continue hosting NBC's ``Late Night With Conan O'Brien'' for the next five years, and then will take over Leno's job, NBC said in an faxed statement. Leno, 54, will announce the change during this evening's ``Tonight Show,'' the network said.

``If there is such a thing as an heir apparent, it was Conan O'Brien,'' said Bill Carroll, vice president of programming at Katz Television Group, which advises TV stations on programming. ``I think the only other person that might even be on the radar, and he just signed a long-term deal, is Jon Stewart.''

Stewart is host of ``The Daily Show,'' a news satire program on Viacom Inc.'s Comedy Central cable channel.

Leno in 1987 began guest hosting for Johnny Carson on ``The Tonight Show.'' He took over for Carson as full-time host in 1992. O'Brien joined NBC as a writer on ``Saturday Night Live'' in 1988 and began hosting his own show in 1993.

The network in the statement didn't disclose how much O'Brien will receive under his contract.
