Thread: My first attempt at coloring....

  1. My first attempt at coloring....

So tonight on The Screen Savers, Bert Monroy quckly showed a bit of comic coloring using Photoshop, which inspired me to give it a shot. So I went on Google and searched for some B&W comic art and went to work.

This is some character called Major Power, it's some comic for kids to be safe with electricity or something. The subject didn't really matter to me, it just looked like it would be fun to color.

So, here's what I've got so far. Please take it easy on a noob

  2. It's a good start. The only thing I'd work on is the chest area.

Things look like they got a little out of control on the left side of the bolt. Shaded areas should be low or being blocked (y'know, shadows). Highlighted areas should be high and/or in the line of light.

You have the outside of his right peck shaded. And if your light source is to his left, that's cool. But then his arm, which is even further 'back' (on an invisible z axis shooting straight out of his chest) and behind the lightsource is the same shade as everything elses.

If the line of deliniation for your shadows starts at that pec, the rest of his arm should be shaded as well (until you get to around his hand which could then again be in the light source).

The other thing is the shade should follow the contour of the muscle, not the bolt. Unless the bolt is stamped into his chest, you wouldn't have that area of highlight running along the side of it. The bold is probably just printed on his body. You won't want a highlight because there is no raised area there, nor is it particularly close to your light source.

As far as technique goes, it's a great start. The lighting needs to be a little more cohesive.

Pretty much, unless you have a reference piece to work from, that's just something you'll pick in time.

    Good job.

That was the only real thing that jumped out at me.

  3. Thanks. That's exactly the kind of feedback I needed...hopefully I'll have some more time tonight to play around with it.
