Thread: Kabuki Quantum Fighter vs Shadow of the Ninja

  1. I gotta go with SotN. I just enjoyed it alot more. I do think Kabuki is a good game though. I would actually rate Dragon Fighter higher than KQF.

Ha, I love how mention of a particular NES titles brings up a whole slew of other ones that are also worth having.

Dragon Fighter, eh? Wasn't that the one with the goofy space-jumping type deal (the main guy could literally jump like there was no gravity) and the main guy on the front cover of the box high-kicking at some of those Chinese ghosts with the paper talismans on their head? If so, I hated it.

I see that everyone is staying within "certain boundaries" (side-scrolling sword/hand fighting) when mentioning games, but has anyone here played "Journey to Silius"? It's also an NES classic (by Sunsoft, and it was supposed to sport the Terminator license - the last boss even looks like an Endoskeleton).

What about "Batman - Return of the Joker"? I found myself liking this game more on NES despite a more cartoony "graphical update" on the Genny.

Metalstorm, even? The gravity-changing was a crucial (and fun) part of the game, having a very well-animated main character sprite.

    - So many classic games...and people are wondering why Funco upped the price for an NES from $25 to $45.

  3. Journey to Silius rocked. Sunsoft was on a roll back then.

I never got to play Return of the Joker. I wonder what differences there are between the NES & the Genesis versions.

Having never played KQF either, I'm going to have to go with SotN. Awesome game! I remember my friends and I were all impressed with the rain and wind effects on the boat level. Still have my copy too.

  4. Like some of the other guys here I never played KQF. It just looked to weird. But you guys have piqued my interest in it if it pays like Batman NES.

So Shadow is gonna get my nod. A fun game that I actually dont remember being able to beat with one player. This game was 2 - player right? ?

Yep....my cousin and I have beaten the living hell out of this game many times over.

For Batman: ROTJ on NES/Genny, there were two differences that stood right out - 1, while the NES version was called "Return of the Joker", the Genny rev was called "REVENGE of the Joker". Also, while the NES had the dark, gritty Batman movie centered-sprites, the Genny had the cartoony blue cape/grey "superfriends-esque" spandex Batman, which really took away from the Dark-Knight feel and "grittiness" of the NES game.

The level design on both versions were the same, while once again, the bosses were redrawn.

Basically, on the Genny, it just looks and feels too goofy for it's own good, which appears to kill everything that Sunsoft went for when they first designed it - it's hard to describe, but things just don't "mix" too well on the Genny version. I stand by the NES version if you plan to track it down (which I think you should).

You're not far-off there either, considering that Solbrain was one of Toei's Metal Hero shows. Shaider, Metalder and Spielban, the shows which were re-edited to become VR Troopers, were all parts of Toei's Metal Hero shows as well. Now you know!

  7. Since people are mentioning games, what about Powerblade. I think that's the name anyway. You play a guy whose weapon is a boomerang but it can be upgraded in several different ways. I remember really liking it even though the main character was kinda crap. Also, I can't remember the name of it, but there was a NES game where you were a cop from the future sent back in time and for some reason you never used a weapon. I remember reading previews for it but never did play it.

Ooooooooooooh Powerblade, that's my game! I have part 2 also, as it seems to be a bit more rare than the first one.

The guy's name was Nova, an Arnold Schartzenegger-type with a boomerang. I'll talk more about it in a minute.

EDIT: Okay, now that I've returned, I can talk a bit more about it.

The main character (Nova) was a bit generic, just think of Ah-nuld in a black tank top and silver pants and shades.

Your main (and only) weapon was a boomerang. Various power-ups could be found to enhance the 'rangs range and power. If you found the x3 rang enhandement, your enemies didn't have a chance. The bosses weren't too difficult, as I remember because if you had enough time, you could beat it in one sitting (but it was fun doing it).

Your objective was to progress through each level, meet a "contact" about 1/2 way through (who'd give you the code to open the door to the level boss). I don't remember if you had to destroy some type of supercomputer or what not, but I do remember there being 6 different levels in which you had to choose from at the beginning, and one level that could only be accessed once you defeated the original 6. I think I just went 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 just for the hell of it.

You had a power meter which determine how far you could throw your 'rangs, and you could again, get power ups to lengthen the meter so you could just about throw it full screen.

Great game. I think it was the perfect length. It wasn't short enough to beat in say, 30 minutes, but just long enough to keep your interest.

I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

Mzo owns and approves of NES Batman, Shatterhand, Power Blade, Vice: Project Doom, and Kabuki Quantum Fighter.

You guys are making me want to hunt down Power Blade 2 and Return of the Joker...
