Thread: Thanksgiving's Dark History

  1. In other mindless news: Has anyone else ever marveled at the fantastic exhibition of stupidity that the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade?

    I know the origins of Thanksgiving. I don't celebrate it per se. I do eat like a king and not work though which is something I can't say no to.

    My dad got shitty attitudes around the holidays for like fifteen YEARS running (and then my parents were divorced) so its something that kinda sends a shiver down my spine.

    Im about to spend Thanksgiving day 3,000 miles away from home and with someone who has never actually celebrated the holiday before. Celebrate the American genocide! CHEER UP, HOLLA!
    It would have already been my day off, normally alone in solitude, I'm managing better this year around it seems as far as dealing with this day goes but its still feeling like crap. I won't bother to go into reasons of why I hate it so much but suffice to say, its would be awesome if i could actualy enjoy this day, i want to so bad.

  5. DAMN. The truth can be pretty appalling sometimes- especially in the genocidal cases of the 1637 massacre and the Wampanoag War.

    It's a shame that this is how things really happened- but it doesn't ruin Thanksgiving for me. I don't celebrate the genocide. In my view, it's a time to enjoy with your family and friends and to be thankful for the good things in life.

  6. Two truths;

    - Every kind of people has screwed other peoples over. If the weak gains power, it oppresses the oppressor. The oppressor becomes the underdog, and the cycle goes on, just with roles changed. That's the easiest way to put it.

    - The past does not equal the present. I also highly admire this country for the special fact that we will bicker and fight and call on each other over things that happened before the current generation's time. At least we have people who want to call past atrocities out on it, but it's also another thing to know that I, you, we weren't the ones responsible. All we can do is look at the past, and try to prevent a similar cycle from repeating. Plus, every nation has its crosses to bear, if you want to be truly fair about it.

    With that said, just because Thanksgiving wasn't built on honeybears and lollipops shouldn't mean you curse and spit on everyone who celebrates. Think of it like that episode in the Simpsons where Lisa was going to expose Jebadiah Springfield as the crook he was. She decides not to, because while the roots and backstory are false, she sees people doing something that gives meaning to the day anyway.

    That's the way I see it - I spend this day with family and I'm happy for it. They use this day to remember what we've been given, what we're thankful for, and being close to each other. Regardless of how it started. So is my entire family a pack of savage, bloodthirsty dogs?

    I wouldn't say so.
