Thread: A few questions for those in Japan.

  1. A few questions for those in Japan.

I deeply love Japan and its culture and plan to visit(if not live in) Japan someday. First, I wanted to know if there are many rural villages left? You know peaceful mountain villages or any of the sort. Secondly, What are some the best big cities to visit? And lastly, for those of you that live in Japan, if you weren't born there, what made you want to live in Japan?

  2. My question is, from what I hear there's a ton of stores open to the public that sell hentai, this true?

Don't stare at me, I was forced to ask.

  3. I heard that the yakuza pay off Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan to fight in the centre of Tokyo so they get the reconstruction contract and make lots of money to buy katanas, hanafuda cards and sushi. Is this true?
Quick zephyrs blow, vexing daft Jim.

I'd think so. I mean, America still has what could be called rural villages. The closest I got was when I went down to Kagawa, and visited my ex's hometown. It was a smaller, more farming-based kind of city. Not quite what you're talking about, though.

Secondly, What are some the best big cities to visit?
Personally, I love Osaka, but most of the Japanophiles only give a crap about Tokyo.

And lastly, for those of you that live in Japan, if you weren't born there, what made you want to live in Japan?
Well, first, I don't think you can serious want to live there until you've lived there for a while and know something about it. I lived there for a year, and still don't truly think I know enough about the place to know if I'd still love it five, ten years down the line. I'd certainly like to go back, live there some more, and see how things go.

There certainly are a number of things I didn't like, or even hated, about Japan. But it is also a nice place. For me, I think one of the biggest draws was simply that it was someplace totally different from America, so it was a new culture to explore and experience. Osaka was an interesting city, everybody I met was super-nice, and being into Japanese-type stuff, shopping was a dream.

I think if you even consider living in Japan, what's best is to work out a way to go there for a year or so like I did. That way, you can go over there, get all of the otaku fanboy thoughts of Japan out of your head, and learn what the country is really about. Then, at that point, you can start to really decide if the country is for you. I know a lot of people who want to live in Japan because of the anime and video games and cute Japanese girls, and that's a really stupid reason for wanting to live there.

Well, except for that part. Ain't nobody gotta feel wrong for wanting to live over there for that last part.

I know that you say you "have a deep love and respect for Japan and it's culture" and whatnot, but I don't think you can have a realistic love and respect for the country until you've spent some time there. I think it is typical for people living here in the States to get this vision of Japan in their heads that come from watching anime and reading manga and playing video games. They then think that Japan is this Godly place, that everything about it is wonderful, and so on. Trust me, I've been there, talking about how great everything in Japan was and how much I loved their culture, when I had never even stepped foot in the country or really knew a damn thing about the culture.

The truth is, just like America or any other country, Japan really sucks sometimes. At times, the bigger cities are so f**king dirty and smelly and ugly that it's repulsive. The people are really nice, but there are times in your daily life when people can be so rude it's shocking. Rules are rules, and unlike Americans, most people won't break or even bend the smallest of rules, no matter how stupid. (I mean this in the way of dealing with companies, public services, etc.) Smelly anime dorks are smelly anime dorks no matter where they are, so even if one does go to Japan, they're still going to be a social outcast. Women are still clearly the weaker sex, and being a foreigner in Japan, while you might not be discriminated against most of the time, you are always reminded of what you are, and you can easily find yourself in situations where you feel very unwanted.

  8. Yeah I still play plenty of ET. And for my question being answered, I should of known no one would take it seriously. Look Id\'d really appreciate it if some one would answer me straight.

EDIT: thanks shidoshi, and i by know means want to go over there for the anime and games, its just a love for the culture and etc.
