I did that today since this thread reminded me about it and now it's working perfectly. I'd had my bro's system for almost a month now and it would have taken me 5 min to fix mine

Neither of my PS2s (one US, one JPN) has given me any grief yet. I've had them both in the standard horizontal position always and will not change the status quo here. I use a DVD player (Samsung DVD-N501 with Nuon) for any movies I watch.

If either of my PS2s give me any shit, I'm not sending it to Sony (who will charge an arm and both legs for the repair). A game store in my town has done repair on my original PS1, so I think they may be able to take care of my PS2 as well.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  3. Pretty much every special edition of the Japanese PS2 has been packaged with a vertical stand recently, If anything id be somewhat sure that Sony recommend placing the PS2 that way.

But they are just destined to break (especially if its a launch or close to model).

It could be that the system was swaying slightly back and forth causing the cd to scratch. Or the system wasnt level/steady.

  5. I’ve had mine vertical for about a year now (no stand either). No problems. Maybe two disc reads errors total. I rarely play scratchy discs, but I do everything else – movies, PS One, etc. Plus I had it modded last spring – to Matt in Hawaii and back via USPS (packed extremely well). And it’s an early generation model. Also, my DVD collection is pretty much engulfing it. I get the feeling that they’re more durable than people make them out to be. I think most are just very careless with their stuff. That or I’m very lucky.

Actually Sony is pretty much admitting to the disc error issues as being their fault. As long as the system is isn't tampered with, all you pay for is shipping to Sony. They are even honoring systems outside of waranty.

  7. My Japanese PS2 is vertical. It seems perfectly fine, though it makes some nasty noises when I'm playing Psyvariar. *-neo

  8. Well, as the thread consensus says, it's something that CAN put ciruclar scratches on your discs, but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.

My advice is to test out a game or DVD that's not worth particularly much and you don't especially care for to see if you have one of dem scratchin' PS2s thar, and go from there
    omg TNL epics!

Same here. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.
