  2. Castlevania 2 was pretty amazing back when it came out...there really wasn't anything like it on NES. Even back then, though, it suffered from being terribly easy (in terms of combat) and damned annoying (in terms of puzzle/event cueing.) Still has great graphics and sound, but the gameplay isn't that modern...

Super Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood, however, are utterly brilliant on every level.

  3. I still play Castlevania II every now and then, mainly for the soundtrack. I generally enjoy the format of the game, but the big killer are the castles themselves. The game was designed to be non-linear, but the castle levels' design always seemed extremely bland compared to other CV titles on the NES.

  4. I dont understand how people couldnt like 4..

Great graphics, brilliant music, a free moving whip people!!!

And the cave stage being one of the best ever.

4 is fantastic. It's the turning point when the series went from good to awesome(although Bloodlines devolved it back). The previous games had the atmosphere and music perfect but 4 is when the gameplay took off.

The free-moving whip seemed fantastic at first. But the more you play CV4 you realize that having total whip control made the game very easy at some parts. Enough so to make the game probably the easiest traditional Castlevania (not counting the exploration-based GBA ones). Don't misunderstand me, I love CV4 and worship it's soundtrack. But I can see why the free-moving whip was abandoned in subsequent Castlevania titles like Dracula-X, Akumajou Dracula X68K, Bloodlines (except for Eric's lance), etc.

I didn't like the free whip. Some limitations are best left as they are, they become a part of the game and much (quality) strategy revolves around them.

  8. I thought the idea of Castlevania 2 was cool but I also thought the game was ass. Couldn't ever get into it, was one of the most vague and random games I've ever played. Why the invisible pits?

No it wasn't, Mario 2 was exactly the same as SMB only with different levels. You're thinking of Doki Doki Panic.

While I did play through it, I always though 2 to be the weakest in the NES trilogy of 'vania games.

3 is the best because of Grant DaNasty.
