Thread: Anyone miss James Cameron?

  1. Anyone miss James Cameron?

James Cameron hasn't directed a major film since 1997's Titanic...man, I miss his stuff. Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss...and Terminator 3 would have been 10,000x better if he had handled it instead of Jonathan Mostow. The IMDB has an "Untitled James Cameron Project" listed for 2005 which is described as "A romance based on the lives of freedivers Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and Audrey Mestre." Well, we all know how reliable the info on the IMDB is, so we'll see what this develops into, if anything. Anyway, does anyone else here wish he'd stop making Titanic Imax movies and make another cool sci-fi/action film or something?

I've read that he's very interested in making a film adaptation to the Japanese manga "Battle Angel Alita" (or Gunm in Japan). Apparently he's a big fan (Can't blame him, so am I) and is shopping around for actors (Though that girl from Dark Angel really seems to fit the bill for Alita..)

  3. Interesting...a Cameron-directed Battle Angel movie would kick ass.

    Yes.

The guy was the KING of sci-fi action movies and then he got all interested in the Titanic (the movie itself, documentaries, research, etc). That's fine but the guy's wasting his talents, IMO.

There are directors who are so well rounded they can tackle any genre and master it (see: Kubrick). Cameron has made a bid for that upper echelon of cinemasters when he aced the romantic Titanic following a career of sci-fi thrillers. However, I would argue his most impressive directorial talent (creating memorable visual images) is wasted in genres not named Sci-Fi Action Thriller. Why not become the greatest ever in one genre rather than treading water in pools not your own?

What's worse is that he hasn't even been expanding his repertoire the last few years. Documentaries? Meh. If he does fashion himself as a rival of Spielberg he should at least be cranking out some movies for our consumption. The impression he's leaving w/me is either A) the egotistical artist who believes he's better than he really is, OR B) the over-the-hill artist w/nothing left to say.

Anyways. I sound pissed (I am...sorta) but I'd go see his next movie on opening day. I should qualify that. I'd go see his next movie provided it promises to deliver impressive visual/aural stimulation. I'll pass on a Romantic Comedy or Period Drama.

  5. Nothing wrong with expanding your talents and trying new things, I just want the guy to do something. However, I'd prefer a sci-fi movie, especially a Terminator prequel set entirely in the future.

  6. He likes water too much do anything besides sunken ship docs. I guess all that time sitting in water for Titanic really fucked with his head.

  7. I've been a fan of his since Terminator and Aliens. Apparently he has been doing some stuff other than the sunken ship docs, like producing (like on Solaris).

Maybe he's a little nervous to follow up on the success of Titanic? The thing with most of his flicks is that he's done most of the writing and prep work as well as directing, so if sci-fi action is what floats his boat, that's fine by me.

On the subject of Gunnm/Battle Angle Alita, supposedly he's already doing some pre-production on it and it will be his next project. I'm a huge fan of the manga, but I just can't picture how this would work in live-action or who would play Alita/Gally. Still, I guess there's no one I would rather have do it than Cameron.

Octopus lips are a huge must.

  9. I've heard Sigourney Weaver has signed up for alien 5 so I don't know if Cameron is still gonna have interest in directing. If he does come through, this could be the best way to end the series, but I've been hearing she wanted Ridley Scott to finish it and that's a strong possability.

Agreed. But the thought of Angelina Jolie playing the role is all wrong.
